WoV:BoB2 Patch 2.06 is out

http://www.shockwaveproductions.com/bob/bob206.htm

The packaging looks great, lets hope the game lives up to it.

I really enjoyed the campaign element of BoB2 but the flying side just fell a little short after being spoiled by FB.

Will find out soon enough.

WB.

Any chance of a kind of review Whiskey?

I’m a bit busy at the moment in RL and would appreciate your thoughts on it.

Is it a stand alone patch or are the others needed?

Splash

I’ll see what I can do Splash, not much time at the moment though. :frowning:

There’s a few impressions over at SimHQ: http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=75&page=1

WB.

I’ve tryed it but it have a FM? I think is arcade

The patch is stand alone so you don’t need any previous patches.

Arcade flight model? I don’t think so
FM feels just fine to me, in some ways even better than IL2/FB (e.g. buffeting and stalls). But then I am no expert and I haven’t tried IL2/FB since v2.04…

One thing to note is that how you experience the FM may be somewhat affected by your stick settings. So it’s best to try out a few different sensitivity settings (I prefer them on max sensitivity, personally).

Certainly not arcade. I’ve been flying it since it came out and it has got progressively better with each patch.
Yes, its different to the IL2 series, but to call it arcade is doing it a dis-service I think.
The trouble is, IL2 is so good in many respects, and is probably the ‘Rolls Royce’ of the genre out there, that its too easy to simply rubbish another sim that has different attributes.

The patch definitely made the AI more intelligent. In the missions that I flew, the friendly AI (both when flying LW or RAF) seemed a lot more competent. I’ve seen AI pairs pull off a few very good moves, it’s as if they are really flying in teams. Also, the loss rates seem to be lowered now to a more realistic level. Many AI pilots make it back to home base now. In other words: the AI fight better, but also defend themselves better.

Coolest new feature (unless it’s been there before): formation peel-offs, just like in the movies

Dunno mate but I’ve tryed to do a loop with 109 in relalistic FM setting and it can do infinity loop

Is it a complete new game?

Or can I download a patch for the orginal Rowan’s BOB (I must have it somewhere )

Download the patch only!

Henkie,

This patch is for Battle of Britain 2: WIngs of Victory, which is a completely different game (though based on the original Rowan code).

If you have Rowan’s BoB, go here: http://bob-ma.ww2airfronts.org/bdgbob/bdgbob.html
Get the latest patch (v.0.99) there.

Ok, thx Johan!

The game looks great! I saw some videos of it on youtube  (Maybe this will run on my laptop hmmm…)

System requirements are quite low, so that shouldn’t be a problem

BoB2 basically has the same gameplay as BoB1, so you may want to try out BoB1 before you decide to buy BoB2.

That is great then. I played BOB before I even started playing IL2

I liked that game very much:)

Here’s a brief AAR of a short recon intercept mission on day one of the Convoy Phase - 10 July 40.

I’ve set up all my Sqns in various states of readiness with two Sqns ordered to patrol 2 seperate convoys. A plot develops indicating a possible recon flight so I order Red Flight of 43 Sqn to intercept.

I decide to jump into the action for this one so I find myself as Mitor Red leader on the runway.

Powering up I lead my flight into the air, thanks to the Buttkicker Gamer I can feel the rumble of the Merlin engine as I power up and the vibration of the undercarriage as we roll down the runway.

Once established in the climb I call in “Hallo Short Jack, Mitor Red airborn over”
The reply comes back “Hello Mitor Leader, Short Jack answering, loud and clear. Vector 118 bandit 4000 feet heading southwest. Buster.”

As my wingmen close in I order “Mitor Sqn, test your guns” and hear both their short bursts and they switch off their safety catches and arm their guns.

In the area of the contact I start searching but this is no rookie I’m hunting, he’s using the cloud cover to make it difficult for me but I spot him as he darts from one cloud to the next.

I close in and hear and feel the plink plink as his rear gunner scores a few hits on me but a good 3 second burst gets him smoking and silences that gunner.

I break off to one side to avoid a collision but his smoking engine helps me keep him in sight through the cloud.

I swing in behind again and give him a long burst from dead astern, I see debris falling from him and he starts a death spiral into the cold channel below.

With a sense of satisfaction I set course for home base with my wingmen joining up in close formation. All the twisting and turning in the cloud has got us a little lost so I call the tower “Hallo Tower, can you give me a vector, over?”
The reply comes back “Hallo Mitor Leader, stear 359 range 20 miles”

Not too far then, I keep the flight just below the cloud in case any marauding 109’s should show up to spoil the party. We soon cross the coast and spot our home base dead ahead.

We start on down pretty sharpish to rearm and refuel, there’s a war on you know!

I start setting up for a circuit and landing “Hallo Tower, may I pancake please?”

“Mitor Leader you are cleared to pancake”

End of the Downwind leg

Finals - a bit low, but a blip of power fixes that

Taxiing in, those hangars look good

Best get my report filed with the Int boys, 1 confirmed I reckon!

Then its off to the mess for tea and stickies.

A few notes:

I can’t recommend VAC enough when it comes to using voice comms for radio commands. The dialogue printed above was actually spoken by me while flying - there was no keyboard use at all, I was able to keep my hands on throttle and stick throughout the mission. I have a VAC profile that includes all the ground agencies - Sapper, Short Jack, Top Hat etc etc so that whatever agency is controlling I can reply with the correct callsign. I also usually set up to fly as one particular Sqn so that I can make one edit to the VAC profile using find/replace to adapt the profile for whatever Sqn I decide to be a part of.

The ButtKicker Gamer is a great addition to the sim experience, but its not cheap! Once its set up well you can get the steady vibration of the engine through your seat. Combined with a FFB stick its a real immersion enhancer. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve almost fallen off my chair when a particularly close flak shell explodes!

TrackIR 6DOF - what can I say, leaning and looking round canopy struts is fantastic. At one point the bomber was out of sight below my nose but I was wary of pushing the stick forward because of the negative g problem with the carburettor, then I thought to myself “hang on, just move your head and look over the nose” and VOILA! there he was.

As for BoB2:WoV, with the 2.06 patch it seems to be really getting there. I’m a great fan of the campaign system and the recent updates to the terrain and multiskin addon make it a real contender. If IL2FB didn’t exist this would be my sim of choice. IL2 just feels more polished to me but BoB2 is well worth a visit.

Whiskey Out.

Nice pictures and report Whiskey

After reading this thread and having now TIR4 for 6DOF, i got enthousiastic again and reinstalled the game with the patch (yes, i was bored of the CTD’s). However when starting up the game i get the message not having the DirectX dll. Did a few reinstallations after uninstall. But it still apears :frowning:

Pax, you need the latest DirectX apparently, look here: http://shockwaveproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7803&sid=ce9449a24bf780982db6820a5f103af9

Hope you get it working.

WB.

Wow, that was quick and i quess the solution

Many thanks Whiskey

TALLY HOOOO

Looks really good Whiskey!

Thx! I will get this game before I get IL2 1946, be sure

A great read, Whiskey!

For the campaign I am currently playing, I decided to tempt fate and enlist as a Stuka pilot  I’m about 5 days into the Convoy phase of the Battle (15 July) and hope to make it to Eagle Day…

Playing the Luftwaffe campaign makes it a whole different game. Personally I find it a lot easier to manage the strategic level. As LW, you only need to plan your missions 3 times per day, whereas when you play the RAF you need to be alert all the time. Hitching a ride as a gunner in a Heinkel is also fun, and when you are part of a 100+ raid it’s very impressive indeed!
