I feel like a kit waiting for Christmas even (In Denmark the peak of of Christmas happens in the evening).
But what I really miss around this release is a countdown clock like the Le Mans countdown clock
OR THIS
They do, but it’s going to be over 30GB and for the torrent to work a number of people need to have it and they won’t on Friday. I might leave until Saturday night/Sunday morning - though I am very keen to get on it, I just won’t get to go on DCS until Sunday night anyway.
I plan to download asap. I would like to prepare a mission for all EAF pilots to start at Ford with personal Spitfires (I have noted most of your favourite squadron codes and aircraft letters) bearing invasion stripes. We could then all fly over the Channel as a wing to land on temporary bases behind the beach head. So we discover the new map all together. A event to film if someone wants to organise how best to do this.
Sounds like a great idea Topsy … personally speaking I will not be buying it any time soon…(until I’ve got a wee drink in me one night, then I’ll probably say f**k it and buy it), can’t justify the money TBH.
I was thinking on making a mission with start on one of the small temporary fields in France.
This should give us a challange
Don’t worry. It will be a while before DCS is up to speed.
Personally I think that DCS have quite a bit to do before they obtain something like Clod.
What they have are an engine and aircraft’s which are closer to reality than the other sims.
What they lack are damage modelling, correct historic period flyable aircraft.
We still need a lot of aircraft’s to make speak to more than fighter-jocks and well as way to run a campaign which can run 4-6 months with command and control of the ground units…aka a SEOW-like scenario.
The roadmap for BoX are getting a lot closer to get a SEOW-like abilities.
- Air Marshall and Field Marshall modes for MP. (i.e. HQ-ATC-GCI type screen to manage a battle with realistic limited info)
5. Can you explain in more detail about Air Marshall and Field Marshall modes for MP? Will it be available only in multiplayer?
It is indeed an MP only feature. It is so the battles can be more closely managed and have some organization which I think will boost MP participation. Part of the problem of current MP is too many lone wolves, not enough squad action and too hard to find targets without labels on. Also, there is no human air traffic control, no human GCI, no new vectors given to players once in air, no recon reports to paint a picture of the battle like in real life. There are some really talented community members with real life military comms experience that could make MP battles much more fun by giving orders to squads of planes or tanks. The information given to the Marshall will be based on real-life limitations like visual ranges etc. This will not be a screen with massive amounts of information. For instance, if recon unit destroyed, Marshall loses that info. Having a good Marshall on your team is another factor that can lead to victory. And the Marshall screen will be optional for server operators. I think it will be popular though. I’ll try to explain it in better detail a little later on.
Everything downloaded and working. Have taken off from France in a Spit! But major problems with TIR due to the sun shining in at my back so it didn’t work so good. Combine that with my fever and I’ll take a break from it for a while. They promise rain tomorrow, so might do more flying then (and with my cold I can’t really be running around very much).
Well, I have done my first flights over Normandy. Mixed feelings to be honest, primarily my graphics needs major work, in the Viggen I had weird flashings that made it really hard to see the hud. I’m not happy how the flight in the Spitfire looked like either. I’m sure the majority of it is due to my settings, but not totally 100% sure it’s only that. Well, I have to play around with settings and see if I can get them better.
Flew with Starfire last night in our personal aircraft out of Ford. We did the classic flight across the Channel crossed the coast near Longues-sur-Mer flew up the past toward la Pointe du Hoc, then inland over Bayeux and Caen to land at Longues. We then took off from there and headed back to Ford.
Impressions :
a) Had some trouble getting DCS updater to find the 2.1 update
b) Normandy and assets could not be found in the in game Module Manager, so had to write up new commands for these (thanks Starfire).
c) My control settings file from 1.5 would not copy to 2.1 - I hate Win10- which puts files in places where you can’t see them even when you have the path. Path descriptions are f****ing misleading.
d) In game (default ?) graphics are much brighter than in 1.5 - the instrument panel is bathed in sunlight much more than in 1.5. Maybe I have to tune my settings - Starfire noted the same. It may turn out to be linked to the season !
e) OK my flight controls were not properly set or tuned, but we both found the Spitfire much more sensitive to speed and rpm changes than in 1.5
f) Ford has a rather rustic feel to it, i.e. not much better than the temporary forward airfields in France - but OK the effort was put into Normandy.
g) Normandy may has a lot of detail and much of it seems non-repetitive scenery.
h) I did’t see any Atlantic Wall fortifications, Starfire saw some bunkers on the coast.
i) We flew in clear conditions with no wind so the sea was pretty flat and uninteresting.
j) Engine sounds are more realistic, the Merlin 66 more throaty, more raucous than in 1.5. I also heard Starfire’s plane much better than in 1.5. From the sound with the canopy closed I could tell exactly where he was without looking around.
At 3 am we quit to get some shuteye and I am eager to build a mission with more planes and assets.
Thx for making that quick mission and hosting.
The Spitfire flight-model seems hysteric in DCS 2.1. I get the 109K feeling from DCS 1.5 all over again.
Killing a B17 is a breeze. A long burst of .303 rips the wing off. Quite impressive. I hoped they where more damage resistant during the war.
Clod looks good, but DCS Normandy looks fantastic. The attention to detail make this map really really cool.
I am running a Ati 7970 with 3GB Ram, Intel i5-6600K 3.5GHz/8GB ram and this is a problem. I dont get any stutter, but the landscape gets blurry and I get input lag as well as trackIR lag which does not relate to trackIR precision mode
The graphics card have been due for replacement for a long time, but this map empathize it even more.
Cant get the fucking bloody map to load…it takes up my full 8gb of system memory I have and my rig dies a fucking death, these fuckers couldn’t optimise my fucking testicles if ye dangled in front of them.
Topsys point d sounds like the same as what I experience in DCS 2.1. I had a similar experience with BoS when I first installed it, but there it disappeared with one of the later major updates.
No problems copying control settings for me (but I can see all hidden files etc in my Windows 10), but I agree that the Spit feels more sensitive to throttle input etc, have to trim all the time, and I have a problem that it’s very easy to “overshoot” with the trim.
As to hardware, I had some extremely long loadtimes, I noticed some slowdowns but not really stutters, have to check what kind of framerate I get. I’m flying on a i7-4770k @3,5GHz (not overclocked! :o), 16GB memory and a AMD R9-290 4GB.
I have seen comments that 16 GB RAM is the min recommendation, more might be better. I’m tempted doubling my memory, but DDR3 is starting to be kind of hard to find, I’d like to get the same type that I already have. I might pop in some smaller modules that I have lying around, just to see if I notice any difference at all.
