Sterling, there was no flak in that mission, just to keep it simple. But 10,000 ft should keep you out of range of small AA guns (HMG’s, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 37mm, 40mm). Above 10,000 ft, you will be in range of medium flak guns (75mm, 3 inch, 85mm, 88mm, 90mm). At 16,000ft up to 50,000ft the heavy flak guns can reach you (105mm, 128mm).
LINKThe average bombing altitude of from 7,000 to 12,000 feet insured a high degree of accuracy, but similarly brought the B-25 into the deadly range of the highly respected and effective German 88 mm Cannon.
Yeh high enough to stay out of the range of the small guns that pop holes in your wings but low enough to get right into the correct height for the huge guns that take your wings off
hmm… i wonder how hard it would be from 30,000 ft lol
I think the ASI must be a bug, it appears to be adding 3% per 1,000 feet whereas it should be 2% per 1,000 feet - back to the TAS chart on the kneepad !
My problem was always the drop in altitude with the level stabiliser. Haven’t had time to try it yet, but are you saying that if the aircraft is trimmed for level flight before engaging it then it will maintain altitude? Or do you need to use elevator trim?
(PS Mikke - fast and low? I’ve got some nice tracks demonstrating the capabilities of the B25 at low level, nowhere to post them at the moment, but might be of interest for those that haven’t flown the aircraft and think bombers are boring )
As regards flak, by using the bombsight you are commiting yourself to flying straight and level into the gun zone, so it is a case of crossing your fingers and sitting on your flak helmet. The only way to protect the bomber flight is for an aircraft that is not bombing to go in first using an evasive pattern. This will attract the nasty stuff away from the bombers, at least in the early stages of the attack.
The problem seems to be in the Norden Sight’s computer. I have heard (though not confirmed) that there is no such problem in the He111, but there is no nifty wee IAS/TAS instrument (or is there?).
But I guess I will stick to 10,000ft for bomb runs where the plane flies at 215mph on full throttle. It does stay level with the level stabiliser now! And set the sight TAS to 250mph. One of the 3 pairs is sure to hit dead centre.
Flak avoidance - so who volunteers to be the decoy? EAF Bomber Group looking for volunteers…apply within, if no suitable candidates then the Adjutant will have to step forward and earn his keep
Seriously, it aint that bad, PeeGee. There are two nice B-25 scripted dogfights in F16 server over Normandy. Both of these I have flown as a single B-25 at 10,000ft and taken minimal damage from Flak. The one time I went on a low level attack was when I died! (Ming, any way to ‘borrow’ these missions for the EAF server? Do you have friends at F16? I don’t see them listed in the download page HERE )
Oh, the other bug fix is the time delay on ship bombing. Bombs no longer pass through ships, so you can set a bomb delay when hitting them. Makes life easier for low level attacks and dive bombing
Dogfight missions Joe? Scripted or non-scripted? You have to delete the objectives line probably only to convert them. Sure thing will bundle them up and send them on later mate, thanks for pointing to that mission download site
I’m up for B-25 missions but I’ve only taken off in one once and never landed yet. Oh the confidence I instill
