For WW2, personally I had the most fun flying in BOX with us all. I was in VR in a SpitVb, with OD and Flash helping protect our bombers, while 51 and others were out to protect their ground assets. It was fast and furious dogfighting and like the IL2/Clod of old. I’m a dog fighter at heart and always will be. For quick action this is the sim I choose and I know CLOD is for Mram and Red (new ROF will be really interesting for me too). In a way though I wish Ic just focused on getting the ww2 sim perfect and create online campaigns we all crave.
For Jets and I have time on my hand, DCS with the lads in the Harrier flying hand made crazy missions has been my real highlight of DCS. Spotting is a nightmare for me, but Mram and Red seemed fine. Online I kept getting lag crashes so feel handmade mission are still best. Phil’s SOW type war with such missions might work really well and though I haven’t flown her in a while, the SpitIX in VR was just such a challenge to land. You need to put the hours in to get the best out of these planes.
TFS and the desert will be interesting and we know online campaign can be run, however will there be anybody to do it, lets hope so. No VR and dated but still a fine sim.
So I have a little time…so BOX in VR in a SpitIX clip wing v a few 109s offline practice.
Might want to check out the updates to the damage model in DCS, Phil has made videos on it - you can actually shoot down the Mig-15 with the F-86 now. It isn’t yet finished but it’s made progress, and they haven’t actually alluded to any updates yet; so it seems it is being tested.
AI/Transport stuff, it’s coming for WW2, there are pretty regular updates of the Assets Pack, but they’re not that frequent.
With regards to lacking big servers, yes and no. It is for WW2, with the exception of Burning Skies. Modern Stuff there are some good servers, like Blue Flag, 104th, ACG Cold War Jets and a few others. SoW is coming but is a way off, it’s going to be missions for the time being, but there will be randomisation and you won’t know what will happen at the beginning of the mission, it’s not like the SoW missions of old before 24/7 came online.
I really like BoX but I think it it still has issues for multiplayer around getting something going that is a competitive campaign, the coding apparently doesn’t support stuff along the lines of SoW. The best we can hope for at the moment is a server like Finnish Virtual Pilots; but it is repetitive, still enjoyable though.
Biggest issue I have with BoX is the stubborn way that they won’t change controls setups…with the pit I have now, I have been asking since last December to add the ability to bind an axis to trim…still waiting.
It’s got to the stage where I’m approaching folks to try and get a script running in Autohotkey, that will allow me to use the trim wheels in the pit and not have to look and press a button to trim the spitfire.
Well put together.
The endless smoking planes of BoX seems to be a thing of the past. I simply can’t get the same performance out of the damaged planes like I used to :smokin:
I agree with Puff about the controls section in BoX. It really is a mess. Just like Puff I put forward a suggestion to change it, but I doubt that it will be the first thing they do
A good start on the subject by Jimmi, but how do we transform our collective appraisal into action ?
I agree that CloD is now showing its age even with the supposed improvement to graphics and map (like the rivers at altitude). IL2 is good on graphics, but now I have flown DCS I find the flight model too easy, the CEM is not really “complex”, the cockpit is not clickable. As an example I flew a Spit MkIX against Ribbon the other day in Berloga turning & burning for quite a while with no attention to temps, rads etc, while in DCS I still haven’t mastered the speed vs “G” equation and I keep ripping the wings off the Spit pulling out after dive bomb attacks.
DCS currently lacks sufficient WWII community to justify setting up a campaign, even though the jet-age pilots seem to have a wide choice of servers and campaigns, so it is surely technically possible. I guess people have been put off by the cost of modules and the time one needs to invest to master the flight dynamics and the systems (on the modern jets) before you can start to enjoy online combat. I agree with Jimmi that the DCS damage model and WWII planeset are well below the standard of other sims, even if improvements have been made.
So it is one thing to make a synopsis where we all agree more or less on the the strengths & weaknesses of each sim, but can we as a group of pilots have any influence on developpers ? Especially BoX and DCS. Repeated requests to fix things posted on the various forums seem to have little effect. Is there some other way to get the message across ?
If a combined approach from community groups could be made with perhaps some undertakings on our part to build, host and get numbers to fly some campaigns, perhaps we could interest developers, who after all are out there to try and make money. For them to spend time & money developing, we need to convince them that they can get a return on investment.
Perhaps we, as users, should take the bull by the horns and describe what would be our ideal sim rather than just compare and give scores. (ie write up detailed technical requirements and send it to 1C Soft Club and Eagle Dynamics).
After spending last two days flying DCS i finally can give my opinion compared to BoX. (Till some point)
Didn’t take Spit for FM reference, p51 was more reasonable choice.
FM; i didn’t spend enough time in DCS and i’m not RL pilot so don’t take me for granted but seems to me that FM is close to each other DCS/BoX, some things are better in DCS and some things are better in BoX. So i would put it on equal!
Mostly difference is in feel of airflow over flight controls (stiffness in relation to speed) and drag which i think is better modeled in BoX, while for example torque effect and some other minor things are better modeled in DCS. Again two days in DCS is too short to give it a final thought.
CEM; not really much to say, DCS with startup procedure and clickpit…
Graphics: Flying in VR and here BoX wins without doubt, i can’t get used to cartoonish look (maps mostly) in DCS and washed up colours, performance is also better in BoX even DCS at least for me run nice on high settings in VR (was quite suprised).

Swoop,
DED is a Russian team so my interaction with them is minimal. Han and the boys handle those communications so I don’t have much insight at the moment as to what will come out of this, but I am always for community involvement in MP. I’m going to be focused on helping Pat Wilson realize his idea for a COOP Campaign system for PWCG which he is beginning to work on with my encouragement and input. Between DED’s work and Pat’s work and other’s there should be some more interesting MP options out there in the coming months.
We’re well aware users want a chat lobby etc. In time we will work to have that, but we have other things to get to first. I only have so many people and so big a budget. The same old story as usual. But as is obvious over time we keep adding new things.
Shame that DCS/ED couldn’t ‘nudge’ developers into making stuff for related ‘theatre/conflict packs’ so you don’t get the weird 109K/long-nose 190 vs Spit IX match up we have now over Normandy. (Also if ED’s rigid rules are: ‘we need a RL flyable example’ then how did the K and Dora sneak in? I don’t believe there are flying examples of those specific marks around today.)
Not those specific, but there are a couple of immediatly previous marks examples flying today, one 190A5 and some 109G, which one of the is a later G10. Not the best but i think it’s quite enough to model the entire plane in a good way.
