Windows 7

Windows 7 is on the CityLink van out for delivery tomorrow. Good price too for the pre-order

Ming

Thought it not out till Friday?

And better price for OEM version!

Will buy it for the PC I intend to build in a not too distant future (just waiting for payday and for socket 1156 problems to be sorted, I hope).

Out for delivery to work it says in tracking (Amazon) Chris, I’m not in work today

Ming

I opted for the free post from amazon and mine is due tomorrow - I may miss flying next week as I get my new gear upto speed

In Sweden you can get the OEM version today, but the upgrade version will take another week.
I have 2 upgrades and one OEM on order

I don’t have the energy to do fresh installs on my working computers, so I trust that Ms have done a good job with the upgrade version. My game rig will get the OEM as dual boot, as I am keeping Vista for a while.

Same for me I think Hans, dual-boot to Vista to begin with slow and easy, so no need to sacrifice EAF meets

I just got unexpected confirmation that my whole Windows 7 order was sent from Inet (Swedish computer shop) today. So I will be installing tomorrow

Okay my Win 7 Ultimate has arrived, I have Vista 64 Ultimate as standard when I got the computer from Overclockers.

With a 1.5 TB hard drive, which guru can tell me what will be best, partition/no partition, dual boot etc?

What would you do in my shoes?

Advice needed before the dreaded reformatting.

Splash

Should get my copy tomorrow, then its a complete reformat, my XP is clogged up but I have been putting off the reformat until Win 7 arrives

Its down to personal taste.

Personally, I’d partition the disk into three partitions. Have one partition for with the OS and then the other two for your other stuff. That way, if you have to re-install you only need wipe/format the OS partition and you’ll have your games and other bits in the other two.

If space becomes, or is likely to become an issue (1.5Tb is a lot of pr0n) you could look at having a smaller OS partition. I’m guessing the OS wont ever be more than 50-100Gb (my Vista install is 7Gb) so partition accordingly.

So, something like 60Gb for the OS and then two 720Gb partitions.

Keets when I did a dual-boot Vista to the Win7 beta I did that Shrink that creates a partition on the boot drive, that all worked fine so I’m thinking about doing that. Or maybe reformat the drive and just have Win7 on there, because eventually I got fed up of always selecting Vista at dual-boot time.

Bloody nightmare keeping track of everything though with a reformat and install

Hmm Win7 isn’t such a drive space hog as Vista

All those Steam games <gulp>

Ok let’s not rush into anything

Ming

All those Steam games <gulp>

If you have all your steam games on a seperate partition, rename the Steam folder, after installing the OS re-install steam to setup the registry bits and then move your old steam folder over the top. No need to download them again.

I used to run dual boot with XP, I had a “flying” OS partition and then my OS partition for doing everything else. This way the kids didn’t install ActiveX, Java games and all the wonderful stuff they seem to destroy/infect a PC with on my IL2 PC.

With Vista I’ve not bothered, but only because they now have my old machine for that.

I just upgraded by Vista Ult 64bit to the new Win 7 Ult 64bit, went painlessly.

Had to upgrade my Saitek drivers to get the stick to work properly (they were like 2 years old), but beyond that it’s been smooth.

after installing the OS re-install steam to setup the registry bits

Ah nice thanks Keets

Steam’s on another drive, pre-loaded that Borderlands yesterday a week in advance ready to roll on day one. Mad Max

Ming in the Steam window, hit File and there is a backup games… in the drop down menu.

It allows you to backup to DVD/CD or as I have done to an external HD source, I will load Steam then re-install by following the prompt. Even I should be able to double click on the icon.

Splash

Nice thanks Splash! will do that

I’m going to wait a week and read up before doing an Upgrade (from the Start button, just sounds so wrong) and then if all is ok I’ll do a full install from Vista. I think we can do a full install but that’s something else to check (sounds too cheap to be a full install perhaps)

Ming

LOL, yeah I’m feeling nervous about doing it as well. I assume you got the upgrade version?

I went onto Amazon and got the full Ultimate pack for 148 quid, cheaper than the upgrade version  weird, got the package and it was true

Splash

Why is everyone buying Ultimate? I cant see anything on it that calls my attention for my home PC…

I think you needed the upgrade Splash if you already had Vista, there should be the full versions on there (the Home Premium DVD) and one needs to shove in an earlier version of Windows to prove one qualifies for the upgrade. Whereas the full versions are for people who weren’t already running Windows, the Disciples of Beelzebub <hex!>

I suspect that people getting the Ultimate version are people who are looking for the more professional functions and who see the difference in price being forgotten about (couple of meals with drinks out) a year or two down the line, right about the time we on Premium start wishing we’d got the Ultimate version

All Steam games backed up, nice thanks Splash
