It was like this:
My HD4850 got fried, I aited looooong for anew one as the old was still in warranty. In the meantime I was using a HD3450.
Since I started using the 3450, and also now that Im back into a 4850, the following problems developed:
- Every time I shut down the PC, resolution goes back to 640x480
- Every time I shut down the PC, Win7 tries to install an update, an ATI driver, and every time the update fails.
Ive tried installing, reinstalling, use driver sweeper, in every conceivable order, but to no avail.
Still need to setup my resolution every time I start the PC…
Any ideas? please?
And now the whole system is starting to collapse
Mayday, mayday, we are going down :(
Ah, pitty Nepe. Hope you find the solution soon. I fear I can’t help you with any good tech advice. Something heavy might be wrong considering what you report.
Drivers? System Memory?
Best wishes.

Card drivers found to be no good in Win7’s opinion, Win7 sets your graphics to very basic VGA/SVGA. Our graphics cards do not need drivers installed to run in VGA mode

Get into Safe mode by hitting the F8 key while Win7 is booting Nepe, then you can install graphics card drivers successfully. Usually.
Plus- any ‘Temp’ folders you can find anywhere on your boot drive, delete all the files in them (the reason, card/hardware drivers use those Temp(orary) folders to expand their zipped drivers and things can go badly sometimes when attempting to install drivers)
Maybe in Safe mode you can turn off Win7’s auto-updating function too. The traitor

Moving from “graphic card problem” to Motherboard problem now.
After a few strange messages from BIOS, and several sudden Windows stops, the system is not starting, not even the BIOS beeps are being heard.
2 months away from my PC because of the graphic card, and now this
Seriously considering in moving to consoles…
Sometimes the system do like this.
Start it, after 2 seconds it totally shuts off, but 2 secs later it starts again on his own. but not getting to BIOS anyway.
Playing with memory sticks, I took off one of them (have 2 x 2GB )
Now it starts:
CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded
POST error occurs!
And it let me continue…
PD- the message shows because I also made a CMOS clear.
Got memory stick back, but in different order. Win7 mem test say everything is ok :-0
Last 5 times system boot up was ok…
Incidentally, I fixed the “back to 640x480” on reboot.
Months ago I changed the boot.ini, checking “Base video”…
