What to do to set up a CLiff of Dover server???

What to do to set up a Cliff of Dover server???

What info do you want, Jimmi?

How to set the server up, or how to set up missions?

well Voss, former EAF pilot and now active in ROF yesterday tried Clod, and he liked it.
He has a good server which he uses on ROF, but he’s thinking on hosting Clod also

so

  1. How to set the server up
    and
  2. how to set up missions

Setting up a dedicated server is fairly easy. You have to do most of it from config files. My PC’s (flying and dedicated server) are off the air at the moment as I’m busy in RL, but I’ll dig out the info I used and post in this thread.

You also have to mess about with steam accounts, but again this is all down to config and initial settings and only have to mess around wit he server when TF patches are released.

Mission setup is very much of a “depends” - it depends largely on what you want to achieve.

Setting up a DF server with no AI is easy, but is also very boring IMHO. This involves setting up a base mission, loading a settings file and starting the server.

This misses a major improvement on IL2 with the way missions run in that you can spawn additional missions whilst within a mission.

To explain further… CoD is similar to IL2, but is superior in that you can overlay missions, whilst a mission is in progress/all ready running. This is very powerful in that you can setup flights of “attacks” and re-use them. I’ll need to explain in the context of what I’ve done with my historic BoB missions.

Each mission is created from a blank mission file using the FMB.

I have a base mission. This determines the play area and has all the scripting I use for stats pages. This mission enables layers to load and pick a plane. The base mission determines which aircraft are available, the time of day, wind and weather.

I have a day scenario mission. This contains all the ground objects I want loaded for the scenario (day of the BoB) we’re flying. So for example on a particular day, the LW are attacking Biggin Hill, the day scenario file would contain ground objects (targets) for Biggin Hill and other objects of interest you’d see along the route the LW took (e.g barrage balloons)

Then I prepare a separate LW attack mission and a separate escort mission. This contains all the enemy bombing attack aircraft and their waypoints to target, the escort mission contains the escort aircraft and their waypoints, along with instructions to escort and attack enemy fighters.

Finally there’s the allied intercept aircraft. This enables the players to join up with AI aircraft and makes you feel part of a bigger formation and a lot safer!

When you fire up the server:
1 You load the base mission
2 load the settings file
3 Load the day file and start the server (people can now join)

4 Get everyone in their aircraft and give the briefing, then take off.

5 Load the LW attack mission
6 Load the LW escort mission
7 Load the Intercept mission

The mission plays out.

If you have other missions available, you can simulate secondary attacks. I have a bunch of Jabo missions which you can load at various intervals automatically or otherwise. These are on the various allied bases along the coast.

Each of the attack missions can be re-used to create larger attacks and/or create the feel of a busier day.

Apologies for the “war and peace” type post, but I hope this helps/prompts questions. I’ll put some of my missions available with instructions on how to run them when I get my PC’s back online.

Thanks Simon, I haven’t looked into this part of Cod yet so very interesting. With the new TF4.1 patch due and with it the new single player Malta campaign, would it be possible to run these online?

Would be cool to have a bash with 51 over Malta again in CoD

In theory yes, as the Malta ground textures are a re skinned Isle of Wight. However, single missions often have additional scripting, which would need looking at.

Quite often it’s easier to write your own missions.

As it’s a re skin, I’m not too excited about it. I can’t see it working online. The proximity of the English coastline ruins the illusion. I’m waiting for the new map mentioned in TF’s roadmap.

Me too but six months seems so far away…and will it be Malta.

Thanks for that though

Hi guys, can anyone help (keets? if he knows how to…) about how to work with confing and steam config to setup a server in CoD?

It depends if you’re setting up a dedicated server or just hosting on your PC.

Dedicated server is fairly easy, you just need relevan config files. I’ll post up a walk through when I get chance.

i just need to host missions…thnks Keets
