You can laugh but that’s probably because you haven’t played it as a proper squad in there and maybe you’ve seen morons and bunny-hoppers (which are getting on my nerves someone do something to stop that FFS)
Swoop and Trooper talking lately about fixing and flanking is getting the juices flowing and also the Brothers In Arms style gameplay is very realistic in BF2. The whole squad setup is as realistic as anything in OFP, maybe the OFP weapons are better and not so many morons in there but-
The maps in there are perfectly realistic and many of them and massive areas by land sea and air: the vehicles are realistic although the planes aren’t much good but I never fly in there the ground action is too good so I haven’t bothered with the planes. The helicopters though are very good to fly and as a gunner, and as transports to take full squads to the enemy rear. Vehicles include APC’s with gunner windows and four or five team members with machine guns poking out the slots on all sides. Bring it on.
CoD2 is glorious for a blast but this CoD2 bunny-hopping prancing-Nazi noncey-dolphin-diving and no PunkBuster and the small areas means all-action firefights with little time to catch your breath and defeat the enemy with squad tactics - but the scenarios of CoD2 are even better than BF2, lovely shaders and smoke, very realistic WW2 towns and villages… good fun too for in-your-face stuff. You don’t stay alive for long in CoD2 with grenade-spamming all over the place - but in BF2 you can stay alive for a whole round sometimes if you’re careful and have a good Commander
BF2 takes you out of the intense close-quarter city firefights of CoD2 (if you want) and allows plenty freedom of action to fix, flank and die horribly - there are also the smaller-scale city firefights and plenty of them - but after selecting the insertion point… so some room for strategy there and tactical scope, room to flank the enemy and call down arty on all maps
I played OFP quite a bit for a while with coop teams, very enjoyable- but now after the BF2 patches I’m not sure that OFP is any more realistic than BF2… the weapons of BF2 are more gameplay-oriented but are reasonably realistic
I mean some things are realistic and some things aren’t in both games… in BF2 communications are much more realistic and there’s an opportunity for real squad tactics. Absolutely vital for good battles.
Real advantages for gameplay in BF2:
Squad members respawn on squad leader, even inside a vehicle. Why didn’t anyone think of this before Maximum 6 in squads and ingame comms work perfectly. Squad leaders have a comms channel to Commander and Commander uses his squads by talking to your squad leaders, proper chain-of-command
Clear objectives: go Special Ops and blow up the enemy installations at their bases. Take out the enemy’s radar/UAV and their Commander can’t use them to ID your squad as it sneaks around blowing everything up
Both sides have a Commander with an overall view of the battlefield from radar and UAVs - but you can seek them out and kill the enemy Commander (they hide usually near their base) and blow up their assets
Commander calls down artillery strikes and supply drops. Be under an arty strike and you’ll not forget it - if you live.
Very little sniper nonsense. I f*cking hate snipers. Sniper has to hold his breath and it’s more difficult than CoD2 sniper. Iron sights too on weapons that have them.
I was in one the other night with a cool squad (SHED clan chaps) all on comms and we’re grabbing vehicles and bombing down rivers pissed as puddings evading enemy lookouts and creeping into the heart of the enemy strongpoints, blokes with knives going in quietly first and opening the way to the rest of us, SpecOps guys with silencers moving around while the rest of the squad goes steaming in with smoke and flashbangs (BF2 new addon - hilarious when you go blind and panic, hit the deck)
But above all of that: the realism of the arenas. Really chaps who like ground action you have to get in there and take a look at the stunning maps. If you don’t get a lift and no vehicles around it really does start to feel like OFP - hours of walking to get anywhere
Don’t respawn and run about like a chicken with its head cut off. Stop a while and team up with people who appear to know what they are doing
Someone mentioned America’s Army has had a makeover? and if it’s half as good as BF2 I’m in like Flynn btw
Best moment of BF2: four squads tearing down a hill all on foot and hundreds of enemy coming up the hill and you can see them from miles away and plan the attack - looked like the Stalingrad scene at the ferry in CoD. Absolutely amazing firefight kicks off, ragdoll bodies flying through the air and no time to breathe hardly even. Like the best moments flying FB, you just forget you’re sitting in front of a computer with brandy luckily
Disclaimer: I like all the ground-action games equally if we’re team-handed. In BF2 though if no comrades are in it’s easy to get into a team of friendly people on comms and work up “Someone go Medic!” “Someone go SpecOps!” a proper squad. Which is what it’s all about after all…
