Well I reckon BF2 is as good as OFP

You can laugh but that’s probably because you haven’t played it as a proper squad in there and maybe you’ve seen morons and bunny-hoppers (which are getting on my nerves someone do something to stop that FFS)

Swoop and Trooper talking lately about fixing and flanking is getting the juices flowing and also the Brothers In Arms style gameplay is very realistic in BF2. The whole squad setup is as realistic as anything in OFP, maybe the OFP weapons are better and not so many morons in there but-

The maps in there are perfectly realistic and many of them and massive areas by land sea and air: the vehicles are realistic although the planes aren’t much good but I never fly in there the ground action is too good so I haven’t bothered with the planes. The helicopters though are very good to fly and as a gunner, and as transports to take full squads to the enemy rear. Vehicles include APC’s with gunner windows and four or five team members with machine guns poking out the slots on all sides. Bring it on.

CoD2 is glorious for a blast but this CoD2 bunny-hopping prancing-Nazi noncey-dolphin-diving and no PunkBuster and the small areas means all-action firefights with little time to catch your breath and defeat the enemy with squad tactics - but the scenarios of CoD2 are even better than BF2, lovely shaders and smoke, very realistic WW2 towns and villages… good fun too for in-your-face stuff. You don’t stay alive for long in CoD2 with grenade-spamming all over the place - but in BF2 you can stay alive for a whole round sometimes if you’re careful and have a good Commander

BF2 takes you out of the intense close-quarter city firefights of CoD2 (if you want) and allows plenty freedom of action to fix, flank and die horribly  - there are also the smaller-scale city firefights and plenty of them - but after selecting the insertion point… so some room for strategy there and tactical scope, room to flank the enemy and call down arty on all maps

I played OFP quite a bit for a while with coop teams, very enjoyable- but now after the BF2 patches I’m not sure that OFP is any more realistic than BF2… the weapons of BF2 are more gameplay-oriented but are reasonably realistic

I mean some things are realistic and some things aren’t in both games… in BF2 communications are much more realistic and there’s an opportunity for real squad tactics. Absolutely vital for good battles.

Real advantages for gameplay in BF2:

Squad members respawn on squad leader, even inside a vehicle. Why didn’t anyone think of this before  Maximum 6 in squads and ingame comms work perfectly. Squad leaders have a comms channel to Commander and Commander uses his squads by talking to your squad leaders, proper chain-of-command

Clear objectives: go Special Ops and blow up the enemy installations at their bases. Take out the enemy’s radar/UAV and their Commander can’t use them to ID your squad as it sneaks around blowing everything up

Both sides have a Commander with an overall view of the battlefield from radar and UAVs - but you can seek them out and kill the enemy Commander (they hide usually near their base) and blow up their assets

Commander calls down artillery strikes and supply drops. Be under an arty strike and you’ll not forget it - if you live.

Very little sniper nonsense. I f*cking hate snipers. Sniper has to hold his breath and it’s more difficult than CoD2 sniper. Iron sights too on weapons that have them.

I was in one the other night with a cool squad (SHED clan chaps) all on comms and we’re grabbing vehicles and bombing down rivers pissed as puddings evading enemy lookouts and creeping into the heart of the enemy strongpoints, blokes with knives going in quietly first and opening the way to the rest of us, SpecOps guys with silencers moving around while the rest of the squad goes steaming in with smoke and flashbangs (BF2 new addon - hilarious when you go blind and panic, hit the deck)

But above all of that: the realism of the arenas. Really chaps who like ground action you have to get in there and take a look at the stunning maps. If you don’t get a lift and no vehicles around it really does start to feel like OFP - hours of walking to get anywhere

Don’t respawn and run about like a chicken with its head cut off. Stop a while and team up with people who appear to know what they are doing

Someone mentioned America’s Army has had a makeover? and if it’s half as good as BF2 I’m in like Flynn btw

Best moment of BF2: four squads tearing down a hill all on foot and hundreds of enemy coming up the hill and you can see them from miles away and plan the attack - looked like the Stalingrad scene at the ferry in CoD. Absolutely amazing firefight kicks off, ragdoll bodies flying through the air and no time to breathe hardly even. Like the best moments flying FB, you just forget you’re sitting in front of a computer with brandy luckily

Disclaimer: I like all the ground-action games equally if we’re team-handed. In BF2 though if no comrades are in it’s easy to get into a team of friendly people on comms and work up “Someone go Medic!” “Someone go SpecOps!” a proper squad. Which is what it’s all about after all…

Ming

Cheers Ming, ive put BF2 on the Xmas list

Ive been playing a lot of AA since the last patch, the special forces stuff is great with some really good maps.

Would love to get in a server with a few of you chaps all working together

the special forces stuff is great with some really good maps

Absolutely nothing beats getting team-handed in there yep with decent weaponry, I’ve got the L85A2 as a Medic’s upgrade (really useful and accurate, bit of a shock that) - AA I like but haven’t played it for a while cos no one rounds us up plus everyone in there looks like Che Guevara. No swarms of Chinese troops where’s me flamethrower

I recommend you at least try the BF2 demo mate and while you’re watching the morons doing the Mexican jumping-bean impersonation don’t let them get on your nerves just see them as fresh meat for a hardened team

I haven’t got the (BF2) Special Forces addon but that sounds good, night missions and that, grappling hooks. I have been flash-banged by SF but only by SF guys on my own side lol but at least I lived to report it - new toys so they’re chucking them everywhere. Dance mother

Ming

Totally unrealistic on other words. :tongue2:

I actually tried a little OFP yesterday, but for some reason it’s not running smooth for me. :frowning:

I can’t comment on BF2 as i have’nt played it, but i do enjoy that type of game. I loved OFP and still have it on my hard drive, i put on a neat mod which gives me the ah6 littlebird and a cool frogman.

I have just got back into AA since the last patch came out, the 3 maps i love are SF Village in which i have been toasted by RPG backblast by a number of EAF players. SF Hospital which is great for getting your honour points as its a fast easy map and the new map SF Extraction which i love but would be better if i could fight with comms like i do in Il2.

It’s just like OFP Meako but fun now there’s a concept to play around with

Everything’s unrealistic really isn’t it when all’s said and done. Realism can only get you so far and after that you have to get out and push.

That’s the thing about the imagination it fills in all those awkward holes in what may pass for reality if… and it helps you to enter that reality and enjoy yourself if you’ll only allow it

I never look at the mantelpiece when I’m poking the fire if you get my drift. I hate seeing Mum’s matchbox there full of raspberry jam

:o - I’ve only just recently got my honor back above 15

Same here since the new patch. I played SF Extraction for the first time last night and it is excellent. The changes they’ve made have removed the bunny hopping, grenade throwing distance which seems to improve gameplay. There’s also a new patch on the way, with more maps.

I’ve not bumped into any EGF online, what are your callsigns? EGF_Keets here.

My favourite maps are:
Insurgent Camp.
SF_CSAR
SF_Extraction
SF_Hospital
and
SF_Sandstorm

I play as Johnny_Red , Honour 18 now although i guess i should add an EGF tag :), i dont think there is a friends list within the game? so it makes tracking you all difficult.

Maybe we could have the OFP room within TS changed to OFP/AA, if your playing jump in, anyone else looking for a game can join and find out which server your on.

I think you can track within ASE.

Have you tried this site: http://aaotracker.4players.de/

Its home of the AA Ops tracker. Tracks your stats on most online servers, there’s no program running in the background as it just scans the servers for your registered name. Also has your online status andcan add buddies etc, so can see if anyone else you know is online.

Thanks Keets, will use that site, cheers.

If you want to add me as a buddy i will stay as Johnny_Red, cant be bothered to start a new name from honour 1 ;).

Now we just need everyone else’s in game names…

Thanks Keets I’ll get the updates and do the EGF header thing

AAO now what’s that all about - Overseas? Bloody Yanks

Ming

If you go to the main americas army website: (www.americasarmy.com),

click on the “your account” link,
login using your account name and password,
click Change Profile,

then you can change your user name without starting all over.

edit: Apologies for hijacking your thread.

That’s ok Keets I’m a dab hand at that myself so no worries

They’re called threads after the guiding thread-in-the-labyrinth of Theseus so they’re expected to jump around a bit. Great fun to be had tweaking the tails of people who think they own threads they begin

I looked last night I’m on 2.1 or summat aaaghh I’ll have to get the whole lot again

EGF_Minos

Theseus readily agreed and with that Ariadne handed him a ball of magic thread which she had received from Daedalus. She then told Theseus to tie one end of the string to the entrance gate of the maze. He was further instructed to allow the rest of the twine to unwind behind him as he made his way into the center of the Labyrinth

Thanks Keets.
And yes sorry Ming, ill go back to lurking, its safer.

Safer?

<sends in black helicopters>

This addon looks the business for you guys who’re into close-quarter stuff more than battlefield tactics: tear gas and flashbangs, SEALs and SAS

http://pc.ign.com/articles/672/672482p1.html

I’ve got SF installed but haven’t got into a game yet

BF2 then SF and only then the patch - or reinstall needed be warned…

Got the >900MB AAO download too for swede-cropping

Please do not tell me I have to pass the tests again <groan>

Hmm Splash helped me out last time IIRC with a cribsheet. Not that I’m suggesting cheating. Yes I bloody am I failed too many times last time it’s so embarrassing innit. Why do you need to ID vehicles someone explain that one there are no vehicles it’s a plot

Ming said: Great fun to be had tweaking the tails of people who think they own threads they begin

No need to apologise JR I was the thread-starter! You might need to read that again

No one ‘owns’ threads I thought I was making that clear and being encouraging sorry mate!

Ok yes I agree, it’s a complicated sentence and I’m not sure that you understood I was talking about me derailing threads in forums and threads other than this one mate… you read more into it than I meant sorry

It’s the Curse of Ming mate. If I speak ironically people think I’m being serious and if I speak seriously people think I’m being ironic

God. Ok one more time

I am not a person who feels possessive about threads I begin, not one little bit mate and I was not in some subtle way being sarcastic and chiding anyone for speaking about anything - I’m not like that Russ, I’m never sarcastic. Ironic sometimes yes it’s the British way but that’s only to make us all smile together - not to take the mickey out of someone… I don’t like people who take the mickey out of people I find that type of person sly and nerdy. You should have noticed that by now mate you’ve known me long enough!

(spot of battlefield bonding there - it’s allowed)

Ming

Here you go Ming, doing those test’s is a pain

Get the Redcaps in here we’ve caught one!

Top man JR thanks mate! That’s a relief

Ming

Oops, didnt notice you posted as i did Ming.

I knew you didnt mind m8, but i did hijack your BF2 post with my AA ramblings, i didnt think a thing of it until Keets posted.

I dont post much as you know and i forget my forum etiquette easily hence my safer comment and the smile  wasnt a dig, honest.

BF2 Special Forces wow that’s all I’m saying

Tear gas you wait until it catches you it’s outstanding. More close-quarters maps and dark maps - a couple like Hotel but there’s a town around you too, or on the huge carrier all through the compartments. Unlocked weapon I don’t know what it is but I like it. Big computer you’ll need though the carrier is truly gigantic, night maps will be kinder with the enfolding dark

Teams I’ve been on wonder why I lag behind a bit all the time checking behind us. Bloody kids
