Video: The Unknown Warrior (EAF machinima film)

This short film is a historical drama based on the true and forgotten air war over the Balkans in 1944. Real humans control the aircraft in this movie.

A dramatic short film made from a historical computer generated campaign, in the flight simulator IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946.
This movie was specifically made for showing how a real ingame mission can become a moving and dramatic story on its own. Nothing is added: all footage are real mission gameplay. I hope this short film can be proof that the best stories, are the real ones happening in the moment.
We follow “The Balkan Air Force” on a dangerous mission to attack a German convoy in the Adriatic Sea. It is a large air force of many types of aircraft and different nationalities, fighting for the same cause: They fight to liberate the Balkans from Nazi occupation.

While the Allies prepare for D-day, the forgotten war in the Balkans continues to rage on with constant and unforgiving ferocity. The Partisans face a desperate fight to liberate their homelands, as the German grip on the Balkans seems as unbreakable as ever.

"This is no war of chieftains or of princes, of dynasties or national ambition; it is a war of peoples and of causes. There are vast numbers, not only in this Island but in every land, who will render faithful service in this war, but whose names will never be known, whose deeds will never be recorded.

This is a War of the Unknown Warriors; but let all strive without failing in faith or in duty, and the dark curse of Hitler will be lifted from our age."

  • Sir Winston Churchill.

I’m very thankful for any likes / thumbs up on YouTube, as this project took many months of painstaking work and I hope to use it for EAF advertising!

Thank you very much and enjoy!

Please like / thumbs up this video on YouTube! I hope this film can become an important EAF recruitment video for the future.

Thank you very much and enjoy!

Thanks Chip! I remembered to credit you this time.

I had to re-upload the movie after I noticed some sounds were missing.

It is now up again.

If people can re-like the video, that would be very good for our advertising.

Wow… Very nice Stunt’. Great change of pace/mood and clever use of a black screen.

I particularly liked the fast editing sequence (8.30) overlaid with the frenetic voice comms; I really felt the desperation of the fight.

Thank God 51 Stormo turned up to kick the enemies “sedere”.

Another great tribute.

Oh and thanks for the attribution.

Great job, Stunt!! Slow&fast movies are perfect…

Really nice video Stuntman! Editing, sound, music etc, great job. Then ending with Churchills words you refer to… so true.

Good good good!
Rough comms let it more immersive!
Another great job!
BRAVO Knut!

Where do you get all the time, Stunt!?

Some nice touches in there, quite creative in parts.

I would say, hope you don’t mind some constructive criticism, that a film like this could use faster pacing and probably a shorter duration. I think that there needs to be more of a human interest story if it’s going to be this length.

There were also, and I’m sure you saw this, quite a few strange movements because you were working from online tracks. Not much you can do about that, I know, but sometimes it’s better to recreate sequences offline to get a clean track recording of all that is happening.

Keep 'em coming…it’s all good advertising

Thanks Baz, it was nice to hear that part of the movie worked out. It took so much work to finish.

I’m glad you liked the different paces, Luft! I start to feel that changes of paces is one of my personal touches I want to keep developing.

Mram, thanks for your kind words. While I was editing this ending, I intuitively looked for a fitting speech by Churchil, and found this one very fitting. Hence I found the name and the theme of the movie too.

Joe, thanks again! Your feedback is always welcome.

I agree it is long and perhaps too long. And it does not have any strong and captivating story from A to B etc. The part standing out in a bad way from all the rest is ironically the convoy attack, the point of the mission in the first place.

The reason I didn’t add any fiction to this this video, which I have done in other missions, was because I wanted to keep everything as pure and close to the real mission and its real gameplay as possible, thus no re-takes or added stories, although it would have been even better indeed.

This movie was specifically made for showing how close a real ingame mission can become a memorable story, rivaling historical drama movies.

Thus thinking for future EAF advertising, I will cut this video down and make a version specialized for recruitment! Only show a much smaller bit of the convoy attack and show snippets of the other parts as well. I will try and get the video under 3 minutes and perfect for a fast-paced action themed recruitment video.

Now that all of you know my plan, I may ask you all for voice acting jobs and perhaps to fly and add new scenes, to make this recruitment video the best possible.

And thanks again to everyone for your compliments! Makes my heart all warm and fussy.

How much are you paying Stunt?

I’m with Mram about the music you used, great choices for a great vid.

Well done mate.

Thanks Charlie!

And thanks Walty! I missed you in the first post.
