Saw that too Brig
IIRC, Bader had joined a formation of fighters thinking they were friendly, only to realise they were 109’s, and turn away.
The guy who shot him down id’d the 109’s, saw a fighter leave the formation, assumed that was a 109 too, and shot the singleton.
That was it Painter, which illustrates what I was saying even more. Thanks
Joining a formation of 109’s
Done that myself once, in VEF I think, got separated from my formation, spotted two aircraft that I assumed were my friendlies. 10 minutes later after furiously trying to catch up I discovered they were 190’s once I’d formed up. Luckily they never saw me and I slipped away unnoticed
being able to identify friend or foe isnt so tricky, difficult in some circumstances like brigs said with the ju 88’s, but knowing who is who in a group of friendly’s like i said is almost impossible sometimes, as you also mentioned brigs the LOD of this game has never changed.
dont get me wrong i will fly in any way asked or whatever settings need to be, but i feel you can only play as much as the game lets you, and its limited right now.
it seems to me it becomes unrealistic sometimes by being too realistic, its unrealistic not knowing who is who and only knowing its a spitfire or a wildcat, in the midway campaign how useful were the coloured noses?? yer they looked great, but did they help with knowing “who is that chasing a zero, you got a bandit on your six break”, ive watched documentry’s and ive read countless books, even spoke to a friends grandfather who was a tail gunner in a lancaster, and all have shown that you could even read the numbers/letters/markings on enemy aircraft nevermind their own wingmen.
its not so much a problem for me like a siad i will fly in any conditions in the name of having a good time, im not whining or moaning and i dont find it annoying not knowing who that is being chased just by looking, but yes i do find it slightly unrealistic and i can only hope storm of war addresses this and other unrealistic parts of il2.
Done it a multitude of times, usualy in Joe’s great inter-EAF dcg’s.
Last one I recall was just after chasing and loosing Herr Osprey in a really enjoyable engagement, coms confusion lead me to believe two contacts were other members of 602, so i slipped into formation with them for about a minute before actually looking at the aircraft, nasty german crosses they had…
Its not much of an excuse but i was genuinely more concerned about Osprey coming back for a go… .lesson learn…
Also did that once myself. A great and realistic experience. Worth having no icons on just for the moment it dawns on you you`re in formation with the wrong side.
in the midway campaign how useful were the colored noses??
Answer Very, I always look at the number or ask about a skin too know who is who, It helps to keep radio chatter down. In Midway I found it very useful to know what flight I was with or who should have been with who (why is green winging for Red check?) Is this not the way it would have been done? I am all for this kind of identification even to the degree of assigned skins for a campaign it just adds to the realism:). I remember flying in a DF Jet server for giggles with some members of 92 and we all kept getting shot down by the same clown till we finally asked him “Are you using cockpit on? he answers: Whats that???” Starfire, has a great point and I total agree, isn’t that the reason that we have joined the EAF we take the sim a bit serious, take it a little further and are not like the Unwashed?

And I thought you had that planned you sneaky bugger!:bootyshk:
FYI: Falcon4 is a ultra realistic F-16 simulation.
People flying it regularly are considered freaks
osprey i disagree, in theory the coloured noses were helpful, but actually in game?? till you were right on the other pilots lap you couldnt see the colours. that was the point i was trying to make. yes they would have been very helpful if the game drew them at good distances, but it doesnt.
and like ive already said, i like flying this way, i like flying with tags on or off, i dont like flying on servers with cockpit off, or unlimited ammo or anything like that, but friendly tags out to 300m or no tags at all i can deal with, i dont prefer one way or the other, and neither will stop me flying on a server.
