With a major upgrade on the horizon I’m looking at ways to save a lot of data - approx 300GB, (photos and games etc [IL2 had gotten huge over the years]). I was thinking about how to store this data so I can wipe my 1TB HDD to install the OS and start from scratch.
I wondered if it feasible to use some sort of online storage for a short period? Does anybody have any ideas or knowledge of this sort of thing?
Not really, but have you thought about your upload bandwidth?
I have access to a shared NAS box and have been downloading my own movies at friends. This kind of facy stuff are only feasable because my own bandwith is high. I also tried uploading from friends but this usually goes less well because of their assymetric (ADSL) connection have a low upload capacity.
WB could you maybe create a 300GB partition on the 1TB and transfer the data to it, then wipe and install the operating system in the 700GB partition. You’d need 300GB-and-a-bit free space on the 1TB of course but we do not know how packed the drive is
Mikke has the EAF server which is ftp-friendly, buy him beer and wooly mittens probably brrr
10 x 30GB files (zipped) on yousendit or similar online storage
I had a sluggish problem at the weekend, when I restored my early November boot drive image. I was also thinking about a (scary) re-install until I remembered the image and dared it not to work - but everything is hunky-dory. I wish I’d kept a backup of a fresh install, will do that next time and you might want to consider that strategy. Lost a week’s worth of level 11 to level 16 of Skyrim saves aaggh frequently backup up your User (save games) folder Mington!
Not for that kind of storage, the BIG partition on the server is a measly 60Gb.
As Classic/Keet says, buy another drive, be it internal or external. A 500Gb external isn’t really that expensive, and can be useful for backup (keep it safe at a different location then the PC that you backed up from, and don’t drop it while it’s on).
