Sata Hdd???

Hi,
As posted elsewhere, i’m gonna wipe and do a dual boot.

As part of this i am buying a new HDD. I can choose between IDE and SATA, my MB has the SATA sockets and i am just a bit wary of putting the SATA HDD in.

I have a few questions:
[ul]
[li]What connections do i need? I have the SATA sockets on my Motherboard, but do they supply data and power or just data?[/li][li]If i put these alongside some IDE drives (2x40GB HDD + 1xDVDRW) will that be okay?[/li][li]How do i make sure my SATA drive is picked up as C: (Primary master)?[/li][li]Is SATA much quicker?[/li][/ul]

Cheers,
Richy…

Yes your Mother board need SATA controller and port, you need SATA cable and power cable (the power cable is the fine not the normal)

you can’t put IDE CD ROM and other on the same ch, the cable is alone for HD

Check the jumper on slave will be a scheme on the HD that show how can put it

SATA I dont think is more quicker, if you want more quick check his RPM speed

you can also put an IDE HD on SATA ch using a seriller, with this you can free more ch on IDE for add more CDROM or for stand alone the CDRW that is important when you read and write because they can have all the ch band

check you mother board website for SATA drivers

as this Seriller, it show the SATA cable in dark and flat and the power thas is little

this is an example of jumper HD for select master or slave (this is on master)

What connections do i need? I have the SATA sockets on my Motherboard, but do they supply data and power or just data?
A SATA cable, which should come with your motherboard? And a PSU lead, which should be available from the PSU, if it’s not an ancient model.

If i put these alongside some IDE drives (2x40GB HDD + 1xDVDRW) will that be okay?
Yes

How do i make sure my SATA drive is picked up as C: (Primary master)?
When you install Windows XP clean (don’t ask me about Vista!) it will ask you which disk is to be the primary. NOTE - you will probably need to put the driver disk in for the SATA drive when you first start the install programme of XP. Watch out for the Blue Screen when it says ‘Press F6 now if you have third party drivers’ or something like that. I can’t remember the exact words.

Is SATA much quicker?
Yep
