I’ve copied this here because the RO site is taking a bit of a hammering and you may not be able to see it at the moment
If Red Orchestra won’t launch:
In your Steam client, right click on RO, click Properties, click Local Files and then Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
It will finish downloading the game.
If you are getting a: This copy of RO: Ostfront is not compatible with the server you are connecting to.
In your Steam client, go to File, click Change User and then log in again.
See you on the battlefield!
Update: I’ve done as instructed, the game is now updating for a second time. Downloading at around 10KB/s with an estimate of 3 to 4 hours - if it doesn’t hang or crash again, which seems unlikely
Let’s hope the game is better than the method of distributing it.
If you are running zone alarm firewall then forget about playing the game as it will re-boot your computer every time. I tried the advice of adding the RO.exe into the program list and setting permissions for it but still get re-boots and so do many others according to their forums. Only option is to uninstall ZA and remove all trace of it as turning it off seems to make no difference either. How an online game passed a beta test and this never flagged up i don’t know. ZA is one of the most widely used firewalls out there. Alot of P***ed off people on the forums at the moment. Looks like i’ll be waiting for the patch
Thanks PeeGee
3% at 30-50KB/sec
Can computers catch fire if you leave them on and go to bed. I’ll take my chances
Ming
Yeah, mine is crashing the computer each time I try to start RO, and I’m running ZA. No way in hell I’m taking the advice of uninstalling ZA
Same problems with having to update the game again at 7pm, took until 10pm to download and get a chance to finally play.
Managed to have an hour playing and first impressions are pretty good.
Much slower gameplay than the likes of DoD, aiming, reloading, moving etc etc.
If you try and shoot on the move you can forget about hitting anything, so thankfully we should not see the bunny hoppers in here.
Maps are huge compared to DoD and CS, not as big as OFP however.
Ballisitics seem more advanced than DoD, took the KAR rifle and fired directly at a guy in the far distance, no hit, aimed and fired above his head and took the guy down.
If you get pinned down by MG fire your vision goes blurry and movement is slowed down, same with being in close proximity to an explosion.
If you enable full gore you see people losing limbs when caught in explosions!
Didnt really try any vehicles.
Anyone about tonight for a session?
Add Johnny_Red to your friends list…or should we have the EGF tag aswell??
Downloaded and installed overnight and running fine this morning in a quick look. We are talking the dog’s bollocks at 1600x1200 I like it, very impressive
Damn I’m out tonight give em hell chaps
JR I’ll post an RO enlistment notice in EGF so we can track comrades - this looks good for WW2 teamwork

I’ll try to jot down some notes during the day for people who haven’t seen RO / got it running yet, and I’ll start a separate review thread. Sorry if it gets a little disjointed, depends how busy I am…
As far as the installation goes, it is a mess. It isn’t clear at the start, but the preload is only part of the program. The rest is downloaded after game release, so you have a whole load of people hammering the server at the same time. On a 2meg ADSL line, I was down to 2.2KB/s at one point  But I was unhappy with the whole STEAM process - the utility is dreadfully flaky, it kept hanging and giving false instance reports to Windows, even when it was doing nothing. It has a page which permanently says “Loading…”. Very poor indeed.
Now, RoadrunR, you ask how a game incompatible with ZA could have passed beta? This is only a guess, but I would think it was because the beta testers were not launching RO via STEAM. I may turn out to be wrong, but I suspect there is no conflict with RO and ZA. I reckon it is STEAM that is incompatible. We’ll see when people start running from the box version.
Although it doesn’t excuse the problem, if you have SP2 then there is no need for a second firewall. The XP firewall is perfectly adequate. OK, I am speaking with the benefit of a fairly tight hardware firewall as well, but I am not aware of many issues from people just relying on XP.
Anyway, keep the faith, the game is worth it.

That would be great thanks PeeGee!
Would you mind in review describing the kit in there as you’re going along if you can please? I’d like to know more about WW2 equipment and people like me who aren’t so familiar with WW2 hardware will really appreciate it. You WW2-buff chaps and your acronyms and nicknames I am so very out of my depth. And my life could depend on it in there!! “No do not throw the pin it will merely make them angry…”
Even I know the Sherman and the Spandau but after that I’m desperate to learn more on the job training

While the Windows XP firewall might be adequate for some, I don’t trust it enough, I get hit by scans and what not on a regular basis and I want to be sure that both my software firewall and the hardware one (the router) catches stuff. I’ve had 70k+ blocked attempts on my gaming PC since I installed ZA. Some are simple stuff like ping requests, other are attempted exploits.
I also want 110% control over what program gets access to the net, and which that allows incoming traffic.
Paranoid? When you’ve seen a brand new PCs get infected before you have the chance to download and install anti-virus software, damn right I am.
Im running Norton Internet Security so fortunately have had no troubles playing the game once the firewall rules were setup. Like Peegee said the pre-load was a little mis-leading since I thought I had 100% installed but once I verified the game only 98% had been installed and I had to wait about 5mins for the extra 2% to download - not a problem tho IMO.
Gameplay wise I think its one of the only games where the rifles are more difficult to use than the machinegun, the MG42/34 and Russian one are excellent and can pin down entire areas so I hope once everyone gets used to the game that these are limited a little. That being said though the rifles are very accurate and aiming is really nice and quick once you get a few buttons setup on your mouse. The sniper is superb and the anti-tank sniper is just fun
Took me a bit of getting used to, especially in regard of who is friend/foe, first three kills I got were friendly, fortunately most of my team had the same trouble so were understanding about it. I found in the end I was sitting with my MG deployed at the exit of our spawn point :o Then I got up to move and was shot instantly by the enemy.
Played a few tank maps and wow, these I think are the most fun, they are big much larger than the normal infantry maps and it takes forever to walk from objectives to another one, enough transport is provided but there are PT-Snipers everywhere just waiting for your tank to come in to view.
The walk animations are a bit weird at first but you get used to themand forget about them once you’ve played the game a few times.
All good here just need to get some of you lot on for a real laugh, we must set a time
Sterling.

I know. One of my PC builds, I deliberately connected to the internet before installing AV and antispyware, just as an experiment. Total build trashed in under 30 seconds - and actually it was the spyware and browser hijackers that did more damage than viruses.
I’ve had 70k+ blocked attempts on my gaming PC since I installed ZA
I had the same when I used Norton Security, intrusion alert was going off the whole time. This trojan blocked, that backdoor attack blocked. And yet I got rid of Norton a year ago, and I haven’t had a single problem. XP and my router firewall do exactly the same job - they just don’t pop up a message to tell me about it every 10 seconds.
Anyway, that’s beside the point. You have chosen to use Zone Alarm, it’s a good product, you should be able to use it without issues.
Sigh, sofar Red Orchestra has just managed one thing on my PC, and that is crashing one of my harddisks with all my music files and videos on it. Hurrah.
Now I have to go and rip 300 cds again, and download several gigs of anime.
Bunch of damn w****er coders.
