Port OS to SSD

Hello!

I have just bought a staggering fast SSD from Intel - but their migration software didn’t allow me to clone over to the SSD because it simply is smaller than the HDD…even if the space used is MUCH less!

And I have no clue how to get my OS, registry and basically all my pre-installed stuff to work when I move over to the SSD. Does anybody have experience with migrating all the necessary files to make sure the PC is just like before, but with the OS on a SSD?

I have tried several times by using Window’s backup feature, but I don’t have enough space it says to do the image (although I have 100 gigs available on a partition). SO I rather start from scratch again and do the whole process more thoroughly - with anyone of your help, if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I used Acronis when I worked in server support a few years back, very good product. I now use their home version to backup and restore. I beleive this latest version handles restoring back to different hardware.

Worth checking out anyway ~

I use Acronis as well…
(maybe we should get mony for this  )

That’s what I used - not allowed because the HDD is larger than the SSD.

Use a disk partition tool to reduce the size of the partition where the OS is.

Then make a copy of the partition to new disk

The partition is already 80 gigs (SSD is 120)

The Acronis program asks me the source disk (the OS) - I select it

Next step is telling it what the target/destination disk is - the SSD

It warns me if you want to proceed due to format - I click yes

Error message pops up, telling me it cannot be done becaause source disk is bigger than target disk.

But in the program I cant click or select a partition, only the DISKS! So even if I have the smaller partition, I cant seem to select it - this is some included freeware of Acronis migration software that came with the SSD.

Teamspeak?

Or you just realize that it’s high time to get a fresh OS install after all.

Hope you get it sorted anyway and start flying with us again!

Windows 7 have build in tool that can do it.

  1. Make a full backup to another disk
  2. Install a clean Windows 7
  3. Restore the backup on top of the Windows 7
