Ciao my good friends,

Recently my wife and I went to Houston for the first private showing of my son’s movie Walking Point followed by his first public retail book signing at Barnes & Noble. I’m happy to report, both events were very successful. The books sold out in an hour. The private movie showing was for the cast, crew, production team, families and sponsoring organizations for the film. The next step to follow will be promoting Walking Point the movie to various high regarded film festivals. After that…who knows! I got to meet “Duke” the K9 Doberman active police dog and his wonderful officer and handler for the movie, Sergeant Ed Sores from California. He is a big and kind gentleman and when we would walk around or go into bars, restaurants with him and Duke both in uniform…we had no fear  Actually, people were affectionately drawn to Duke who has a very friendly persona.

I had time to go to the Houston shipping channel that runs up from the Gulf of Mexico and visit a truly historic remnant of WWII…the USN Battelship Texas BB35. It is the only surviving war ship that served both in WWI and WWII. Fully manned, it carried 1,800 sailors in combat. The Texas was at Normandy D-Day and shelled Omaha Beach. It was also struck by German artillery. The Texas also served in the Pacific including shelling Mount Shurabachi at Iwo Jima and later at Okinawa.

Few more pics at Houston River Oaks Theater. This fall my son indicates they may start the first run in US film festival in San Francisco, perhaps Las Vegas …details to follow. My son and his wife (co-executive producer for film) are taking a rest and are going on an Alaskan adventure.I don’t think that is a “rest” LOL!! I think its a well deserved “get away.”

Pic 1…after the film during question/answer with cast and part of the production crew that attended, I complimented the entire group and had a question about film production. I learned that a number of the US Marine re enactors in the film are both active or US military veterans. The young boy (age 11) who plays the role of the child in love with his dog, Duke and has to give him up to the War Department cause for formation of Pacific USMC “devil dogs” was brilliant, talented and was so very happy to meet Duke again after being his best friend during film production. My friends, I can’t express how en heartened I was to see and hear the many wonderful young and early adult Americans involved and their families. IMO, while the news media focuses far too much of the left and ignores the solid real values of our younger generation.

I had a wonderful time with several of the Japanese actors, terrific young men! One revealed to me that his grandfather who lived on far southern island of Japan, in 1945 he was ordered in three days to serve as a Kamikaze pilot as Japan knew Allies were preparing to invade the homeland . He did not want to do so, he had a good friend in California, but when called he would have to fly and sacrifice as Divine Wind. His grandfather always believed the war with Japan could have been completely avoided. He believed the cause was failure to properly interpret words and language. Thankfully, his life and many others were spared…During that three day period… the bomb were dropped…ending the war.

Some pics from aboard the Texas. I learned very soon, it will be towed to new location for further preservation and maintenance. Was absolutely incredible to see the firepower! Each time we fly a Vp Mod Pacific carrier mission, I can relate to the sound of the AA 40mm pom-poms, 20 mm, 3 inch guns and 50 cal’s. The 14 inch gun turrets are massive and in its day, regardless whether Allied or Axis the battleships had to be terrifying encounter regardless if ship to ground shelling or ship to ship naval warfare. I learned that Italy had several state of art battleships that as part of the armistice were relocated to Malta. I think the Germans attempted to attack/sink at least one of the Italian warships.

Ah, if correct…maybe a VP Mod mission idea? I’ll do more research.

Book Signing Barnes & Noble after movie premier.
My son, Sergeant. Soares with K9 Duke and young actor reunited with Duke.

Ciao gentlemen, all the best

Robert
