Thank you OD! very useful! after reading it i’m trying to resist buying the OR… i’ll begin to replenish my monebox!
have you tried using it as a normal monitor plus track-ir support in CLOD??
here you have a review of the vive vs oculus made by a nerd flight simmer like us (i still have to read it!)
here is his review of the wharthog
I have. So far I’ve got the game to launch on a ‘virtual desktop’ but it’s not working right - yet. I’ve only had five minutes working on it so far. I’m sure I’ll crack it.
Soooo, Im in Dublin, a friend of mine who works in facebook got an Oculus for a couple of weeks, and I convinced him to install DCS Free version of course, so I could only fly the TF51 and Su25T
My impressions:
WOW, WOW, WOW
In more detail:
The first thing I was blaffergasted with was the “Oh my god I’m inside a cockpit!”. Superb quality of the graphics (more so in the Su25 than Tf51), my hand immediately wanted to grab the joystick! Only downside, I coudlnt read the dials, but thats maybe just me who didn’t really play with the graphic settings. But even the terrain and trees looked superb, the 3d feeling makes you believe much more in the reality of everything around you. Everything comes alive, and no 2D monitor can get even closer to that. It’s like all the graphics and textures were don for the Oculus, and the 2D representation is very poor and comic-like.
Second is the size of the things around you. The cockpit feels small, but you look behind and “jeez, those wings are BIG”. When I was at the airport I was amazed at the size of the vehicles and buildings. The nose of the Mustang in front of you really looks massive, just how pilots write about it.
The notion of distance is incredible. In particular at low altitude you get a much better notion of how high you are or how far from those mountains. You can tell that formation flying with the Oculus must be much easier. I did a couple landings and they were easy.
And then theres the sickness. I performed a loop and a few rolls and I was already dizzy, I can tell Im not nearly ready to fly a dogfight, or I will be throwing up in seconds.
Guys, it’s amazing. Nothing comes close to the feeling of this, but a real flight.
Thanks chaps for your reviews!
My birthday is on a month… I guess I won’t resist making this present to myself, unless I manage to stay rational and wait to see what gets more support, the Rift or the Vive (as of today, I’d still buy the latter).
Vive is better for the hand recognition that allow you to interact with your hands jn the virtual world! (Game changer from what i understand)
rift hasn’t released the hand peripherals yet!
as for image quality Rift should be slightly better so would go that way if to be used only for a flight sim…!
I don’t think there is any support for that, so far, in the sims as yet. I’m sure it is something that they would try to build into DCS, if they can. I don’t know how they would go about it in the older sims like Cliffs of Dover.
I think we’re stuck with the mouse and key presses for the time being, but it woud be great to be able to flick the switches in game (would make things a lot easier!)
