I have found a bug with the Hackdirt Quest in Oblivion - not fatal but potentially bloody annoying. I’ve put the problem, and a workaround, further down. I have kept the “spoiler” element of it to a minimum, but I’ve had to give a few details.

Problem:
Once you have accomplished the aim of the quest then you will be attacked by all and sundry - the village acts like any hostile dungeon. You will naturally grab anything lying around that you need, and there is no red cursor to warn you that you shouldn’t. Items in your inventory will not be marked as stolen.
However, when you get back to a town, the Guards will have you down as having stolen possibly hundreds of items and there will be a massive bounty on you. Time in jail leads to a fairly considerable loss of skills.
If you want to do the quest, the best compromise after completing it, but before returning to a town, is as follows:
Use the ~ tilde key to open the console.
Type player.setcrimegold 0 and return.
You will still have the “crime” on your character record, but with a zero bounty, so the guards will ignore it.
The only other way is to assume that every object anywhere in the village belongs to someone else and to touch nothing, but this is rather impractical, not to say unfair.
