Name the Plane

This is a plane very close to my heart myself, Onz and my uncle used to look after this plane as volunteers at a local museum. In the days before Health and Safety we used to clamber all over her and i do mean all over.

She’s a type not familiar to everyone so im interested to see how many of us know what she is without googling here.

No prize of course cos im tight.

Looks like a motorized Glider (Lastensegler) to me.

Edit: Looking at the belly its highly doubtable  I have no idea

maybe English Flag?

don’t know! :roflmao:

give you a clue, its derived from a very famous bomber and was used extensively in the berlin airlift.

Ok, this cornered cockpit structure looks abit like a avro.

yes its an avro a sibling to the lancaster, in fact the fuel tanks from this aircraft were taken out some years ago to keep the city of lincoln lancaster in the BBMF flying.

Looks very much like a lanc yes, but like a “civilised” version

Which obviously means it looks gorgeous.

You mean “a lot like a Lanc, but with the body replaced by a box with a bend at the wings”?

Sorry, can’t name it

The wings are a dead give away of the pedigree, you can see it’s derived from the Lanc, they’re identical. I’d guess at a Lancastrian or a York, but have only ever seen a side profile of either of them.

Keets got it with Avro York

The photo is of the one at RAF Cosford Museum.

An Avro York was also used by Churchill as his personal aircraft, and as i said before its big claim to fame was its role in the Berlin Airlift, where they carried every type of cargo.

As i understand it during the war the York was only produced in small numbers as the urgent need was for Lancasters, and the USA were pumping out lots of DC3’s and of course post war there were so many DC3’s about it had was not really needed.
