Got it for Christmas. Anyone who’s read his other works (Korea, Normandy, Bomber Command) will find this written in the same intelligent and informative style (what a book critic I am :))
It’s the story of German defeat from about June 1944 to May 1945, and covers all fronts as well as the internal collapse of political and civil life. However, it’s first and foremost a military history and a very good one at that. After reading a lot of military history accademically, I’m pretty inured to accounts of death and destruction, but even I was suprised at just how much damage and suffering was caused to Germany in the last months (largely, but by no means exclusively, in the East). Interesting to compare with a hypothetical landing on Kyushu, which he does.
Very worthwhile, and usefuly for making some historic FMB’s
