a crash course in flying the LaGG-3 on full difficulty for those having troubles. It’s broken into 3 videos and includes starting procedure, engine management, takeoff and landing. It isn’t comprehensive, I made it to help others get off the ground if they are having trouble. I am not using maximum graphics but they are medium high. I’m using a radeon 6850, not exactly top of the line.

Useful!!
I’ll think I’ll leave this until the 1st patch is released. Hopefully this will cure my throttle button problems. Assign throttle axis and its back to front.Click on the invert icon in settings and it starts working correctly but will only travel 50%.Assign a button to pitch control and the lever will only go one way.Assign 2 buttons to oil and water rads and neither work.
See you in the spring!
Tips on flying the Lagg from the forum -
Really taking the LaGG out for a spin tonight (sometimes litterally, most of the times not) and I’m definately starting to enjoy it, and even without opposition, I’m starting to learn its strengths and weaknesses.
Just like most of the planes in RoF it has a very unique feeling, which I suspect will be very distinct from any of the other planes in BoS. The LaGGs temper is centered around its tendency to stall unevenly and often unpredictably, light and responsive controls, poor powerloading and tendency to slip and burn energy.
There are many weaknesses and peculiar quirks to the LaGG, most of which are too well known to list here, but there are some apparent strengths as well, which I would like to discuss:
-
The controls are responsive and well balanced with a pleasantly effective rudder (in flight). Aside from the marked tail-heaviness (which reminds me of the RoF S.E.5a and is propably caused by the same phenomenon) the plane responds nicely to input. Its handling difficulties clearly stem from being underpowered and its wing design, not from the controls.
-
Even though it’s reluctant to go into a nose dive, the LaGG seems to dive very well. It picks up speed fast, and the speed of the dive can be controlled to a degree by slipping, something the LaGG loves to do. Controls stiffen up above 500 km/h but remain functionable.
-
The LaGG performs poorly in the vertical, but once you find its “balance” it is really very agile. Its roll rate is mangnificent and can easily be sustained trough 5 or more 360s. Likewise its initial turn rate is very good, but is not sustainable. With a high starting speed a sharp turn can be sustained through a full 360 (which I managed to do for the first time tonight) but not much more. The LaGG prefers a left hand turn, and with a starting speed of 500 km/h I was able to complete 360 degrees in just 15 seconds, which is propably a bit too fast compared to real life (IIRC the Yak-1 was supposed to be able to do a full turn in 16 sec). In all cases, speed is the key. If you initiate any maneuver below 350km/h, don’t come crying when the LaGG seizes up completely and takes a nose dive.
-
View from the cockpit is generally good even without the “cheat” of sticking your head out of the open canopy, with very light framing. Rear view is pretty limited, as you’d expect, but is propably better than what we’ll get in the Bf-109. The cockpit layout is simple and logical but rather sparse.
Overall I can see the LaGG perform pretty similar to the Nieuport 17 in RoF. It’s never gonna be the fastest, and can’t sustain any maneuver for very long without severe penalty, but once you find the right “balance”, it can do some quite amazing stuff
I’m getting somewhere at last Skip. Looks like I can only set rads etc in “expert” mode??
Im defo going to try TiR again now I have Clod and BoS
Maybe this has also something to do with assignment and conflicting another causing the problem. I had a problem with my water radiateur, which I couldn’t close more then 39%. I discovered that I used the same slider for the engine cowl flaps. Do you see an orange icon with two files?
Charlie check out this bug thread for that, some fixes in there worth a try mate - http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/2184-throttle-will-not-move-past-50/
One more thing (for the mo) Ive been trying to take off in expert mode without luck but I keep getting a message in the bottom left hand corner saying “your connection to the master server has been temporarily lost”
Will this affect offline play??
Had the same message today while sorting out my controls and I could still fly.
Just tried for the umpteenth time. No luck at all. Start engine and let warm up, set flaps etc.As soon as I start to roll the message pops up.Weird.
RoF does this occasionally when you login, its part of the verification that you have a license. As its alpha and there’s no online, nor does it affect anything, I’d ignore it.
When this pops up i turn the HUDmessages off with pressing “H”.
It means nothing regarding flying the plane.
Charlie, the inverted axis and then 50% bug is getting fixed for next weeks session. Check out today’s update from Loft.

I cant check anything at the mo Skip.
I was flying it this morning.I am now comfortable with my settings that I used in mission 00 and 01 (loved the taxiing part in mission 01…great experience)
I was looking to do the “en route” misson 03 but now I cannot get launch the game, it keeps saying about that internet connection temporarily unavaialble and to check my connection, yet I am online here ??
It’s Friday today.
The game only runs Tuesday to Thursday for the next few months.
That’ll be it then. (Although I was flying it this morning…Friday)
Cheers Brigs :o
Russian time Well you’re ahead of me, I’m still flying about in mission 1.
