Il-2 1946

Well, bought the DVD and have spent some time flying tonight.

I installed in a new folder, and copied some stuff from my PF installation.

Original stick settings was too unsensitive for my taste, so I set it up the same as I have for PF.

Overall planes seems a little easier to fly, shooting also seemed a bit easier, but might have been because I oly flew against AI (no online flying in -46 so far), or I simply have a good day.

Tried some of the new planes, A-20C is a decent addition, might come in handy in coming wars/SE’s. Also tried some of the new jets and prop/rocket planes, and while fun for a bit, I doubt I’ll spend much time flying them.

Started up a campaing in the new IL-10 and flew one mission. Visibility in it isn’t the best, but it kept flying even after I had been attacked by a sneaky 109, though the engine started to sound bad just before I came in for landing. Was surprisingly easy to put it down despite having a lot of black in my front view, and a damaged plane.

Final judgement will have to wait until I have flown it online.

I don’t think there’s any lasting appeal in the piston/jet/rocket testbed aircraft (although it’s nice to learn about them by flying them for a bit!) but there’s got to be some appeal in jet-vs-jet combat?

Skin the Ta183 as a Gloster Javelin and interdict Tu-4s… play Pseudo-Korea with RAAF F-51s vs Korean MiG-9s…

Now I have tried to get around the Securom thingy, but so far no luck. :frowning:

Simply replacing the .exe didn’t work. Replacing .exe and some .dll made it simply start as 4.05m instead.
Copying new .sfs files to 4.05 installation didn’t work, exe will not execute.

cobblers :frowning:

Got this from a known “gamecdcopying” website
[ol]
[li]Install the game - Full Installation.
[/li][li]Mount the NS-IL2S1946_MAXI-POSEDEN.MDS Maxi-Image in DAEMON Tools v4.08.
[/li][li]Deactivate All Optical IDE drives in the Device Manager.
[/li][li]Use an anti-blacklisting tool, like Y.A.S.U v1.03, to avoid blacklisting of DAEMON Tools.
[/li][li]Play the Game!
[/li][/ol]
Simple

If it does become impossible to play 1946 without the CD, I can see me staying on 4.05 :frowning:
I can’t be digging out a disc everytime I want to play IL2 or have one permanently stuck in a drive either.
It’s a PC not a playstation

EDIT: I suppose I could always get the downloads, I wonder how they are going to implement securerom then

Points 2 and 3 can be replaced by running Daemon Tools v6 with all options on.

Added:
Daemon Tools v6 included some type of spyware that could be deleted. (discovered by Win Defender before it could install)

That “solution” actually sounds like a lot more problem then keeping the disk in the drive.

Yes, I will keep my original DVD in the drive. It is a gaming-only puter anyway, so no big deal.

I just installed “1946” with no problems at all (in a separate folder from 4.05m).

I got a clever tip at SIMHQ how to handle the 2 versions in HL:

So does this mean that if you want to play both 4.05 + 4.07 you’ve got to have them installed in parallel rather than using the mod switcher tool that swapped 4.04/4.05? Space on my HD is already getting tight…:frowning:

If so might be easier to to go the whole hog and switch entirely to 4.07 and just copy skins/missiions and stick settings over then…

I reckon (I haven’t tried this) that you can identify which 4.05m files get overwritten, save them to a different folder, install 4.07m into the existing il-2 folder, copy the 4.07m specific files to a folder of their own, and swap them back and forth exactly like you do with 4.04/4.05.

All you need to do is identify the overwritten files.

That’s my thinking there is a utility that can swaop the files in and out. I posted it up when we were in the change from 4.04/4.05.
I saw a post on Simhq recommending the same with 4.07, but it dissappeared when they got all paranoid over the negative feedback from securerom. Another appeared last night. I can see no reason why the newer files.sfs and map.sfs files shouldn’t work in the 4.05 install.
The downloadable patches will not have securerom and as far as I know the secure rom only encrypts the .exe not the game files.

From my somewhat limited testing, it doesn’t work. When I copied the new sfs-files to my 4.05 installation it simply wouldn’t run.

So I haven’t found a alternative to having two installs side by side.

Perhaps the other way around does work, ie to remove the new files and replace the .sfs’s with 4.05, can work if you only want one installation. Still doesn’t get rid of Securom (irritating but not too bad from what I’ve seen).

This is what is confusing me. Securerom works by encrypting the exe. The exe is then unencrypted when run by inserting the DVD. Hence the moanibing about overheads and fps loss.

Now the old .exe will run and call up files or file type to use to run the game. How does the old exe know that the newer files are new when every install prior to 4.07 will run off of the old .exe.

AFAIK the naming convention doesn’t seem to have changed, what has changed I wonder.

Made even more frustrating because I haven’t got it. :frowning:

The solution brigs mentions is pretty much what I will run, its not hard to do once you have Daemon running (I use v4.06) and the image is mounted its a once only operation.

I use StopProt instead of YASU, just fire it up, click “hide” (for the virtual devices) close the util and jobs done, if at anytime you want to unhide, just fire up and click “restore” although rebooting the PC will also do this.
It works for GTR2 which has the same securom protection.

Just 3 clicks and no DVD/CD for any securom/safedisc/laserlock/RMPS protected game as long as your PC remains in session

Got it but on hold here, tomorrow’s soon enough. Looks real nice

oh no, cant be arsed with all that daemon stuff. Tried it once, caused more aggro than it solved. Guess the DVd will just have to sit in the drive until a less invasive solution appears. Good thing Ive got 2 drives (and a spare 3rd if necessary).

I can’t be doing with all the daemon stuff too…

Got 1946 sitting in my filthly paws right now but haven’t installed it yet…

Not bothered about leaving the DVD in the drive - just want to be able to revert to 4.05 while everone else catches up and not having to lose all my skins/missions/campaigns etc…

Anyone tried upgrading your old install with the 1946 DVD, but using the JSGME generic mod swapper thing to swap the old sfs and 4.05 exe in and out?

(ie 4.07 securom is the base and you revert to earlier versions - rather than putting the 4.07 exe in a 4.05 main folder?)

Ok Daemon and YASU works no problems (not ProtStop though).
Can’t see were its a hassle, you can tell yasu to hide virtual drives on startup, mount the image in daemon and never have to worry about forgetting the disk/ leaving disk in, again :wink2:
