I Think I've Found My Home!

Hello, and thanks for reading my post. I’ve been flying DCS and IL-2 in single-player for about a year now, and I figure now is the time to take the plunge into multiplayer. So I started looking online and discovered the EAF. As a result, I got in contact with Tom, and we discussed the opportunity for me to get involved and be considered for OTU and hopefully the coveted pilot’s wings if all goes well.

I live in the United States, but my schedule is quite flexible, enabling me to fly with my cousins across the pond in your evening and my afternoon. In real life, I am a Professor in Computer Science at a nearby college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have always loved aviation, and while I’ve never actually flown for real, I started dabbling with combat flight simulators a couple of years back, starting with Cliffs of Dover. I then discovered IL-2, as well as DCS. As I got more and more interested, I invested in some good hardware and started to learn how to fly the WWII aircraft. I enjoy studying WWII, and I have a lot of respect and appreciation for the RAF and their role in the Battle of Britain, as well as their efforts throughout the rest of the war.

I’ve played single-player enough to realize that fighting the AI isn’t really very realistic, and that nothing beats PvP online. I wanted to find a squadron that considered historical accuracy important as opposed to just wanting to shoot other planes down. When I saw the rules of conduct, ranking system, and other resources you provide visitors to explore, it seemed the perfect fit for me. I am very much a “noob” when it comes to MP, but I really appreciated Tom’s comment in regard to your being a team, placing importance on sharing knowledge and experience with all members to bring everyone up to as high a level as possible. So many squadrons are formed where it’s really all about kill scores; where individuals want the highest scores but have to work together to stay alive and have that chance. I can understand wanting to shoot down as many bandits as you can, but personally I just enjoy flying, the immersion, the historical background and accuracy of the mission, and the camaraderie that comes along with getting to know other virtual pilots and flying with them.

I’ve spent my time mostly with the Spitfire and P-51D Mustang in both IL-2 and DCS, but I’m flexible and open to whatever you guys are doing at the time. That said, my love and favorite flying is in the Spitfire in a WWII environment. If any of you have any questions you’d like to ask, feel free to do so. I’m ready to take the next step, as it were, and begin the process of becoming a pilot and joining a squadron if you’ll have me.

Take Care,
Tage

Great to have you on board! Hopefully one of the Training Officers will be with you to send you the joining information shortly! I was about to send you another e-mail (it’s Tom by the way). If you’re about I should be online this evening in either DCS or BoX so we could have a chat on TeamSpeak and go through some bits and pieces in either Sim.

Hopefully fly with you soon,

OD (Tom)

Welcome!

Hi there Tage, be very welcome, bienvenido!

If something makes EAF special is that friendship and respect are much more important than being a bad-ass kill-them-all ace.

Im not flying much at the moment, but reading an intro like yours make me wanna take back my T/O wings and take my rusty Spit back where it belongs…the sky!

See you soon, and don´t hesitate to ask for anything.

Hi Tage

I am glad that want to join us. I an few hours I will send you some intructions and material to get you startet.
I am one of those ‘pesky’ training officers who try and make the on-boarding procedure go as smoothly as possible.
Hope to hear your voice soon.

Cheers,

Hello, Starfire! I’m looking forward to whatever you send me, and I’ll dig into it right away. Thanks for providing the training! You’re not pesky at all — your services are invaluable!

Talk to you soon!!

Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement! I have access to the Wiki, I’ve installed TeamSpeak, and I have printed out and read through the training welcome material as well as the EAF Combat Doctrine web page. It all makes sense to me. Is my next step to get on to TeamSpeak on a training night?

Welcome Tage, looking forward to flying with you

Stevie

Welcome to EAF Tage! As you have probably noticed I have added a EAF_T_ to your callsign and put you in the trainee group here, so you should be able to see some new subforums. Sorry for the late add, but as I said in another thread, it’s been a busy vacation for me.

Welcome Tage,

I was new to MP a couple of years ago and found EAF by chance. I am very happy to have gone through the OTU which taught me a lot about team flying, formation, scanning, flight manoeuvres etc. I was amazed by the availability and patience of the TO’s each with their own approach but each bringing a different perspective to online flying.
I was very lucky that as my initial training came to an end EAF took part in a Storm of War campaign in Cliffs of Dover and I just qualified to join in. The campaign lasted about 5 months with flying mainly on Thursdays but there was plenty to do the rest of the time like ferrying a/c from depots to front line stations or helping out with small patrols. The best was however on nights when the whole squadron was scrambled and we all took off to intercept incoming raids.
I have never had such an immersive experience in my life, and I can’t wait for the next SoW campaign to start, perhaps this time in DCS.
So train up as fast as you can and I hope that you will be ready when the next campaign starts.

Brgds Topsy

Sorry for the Delay!

Welcome home!

From what you write i think you landed in the right spot!

:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:

But now since we have some personnel on holiday…
Start by washing the Latrine
peel potatoes
and wash the planes! (you are not allowed to take them for a spin unless with a training officer!
