Hia, questiions about OPF

I bought it from the bargain bin. Have been googlin’ abit. Don’t really know the game well. Can you give a comparison between OPF, MoHaa, CoD and Battlefield 1942. For what crowd are they written.

I was thinking about:

  • AI quality, mixing AI and Human.
  • Quality of scripts for mission building. Mission builder?
  • Expandability, Modding. Are there quality mods. Or do they get stuck because of the work load. Modding Tools? Found Invasion 1944.
  • I can not find trenches, nor foxholes nor Bunkers in OPF. Wierd. Fighting in houses neither.
  • Long range AI such as artillery, supporting planes and armour. Don’t want to fly or drive them myself. But how intelligent would an IL-2 Sturmovik be in a ground strike. How would an AI Sturmgeschutz III be in artillery or antitank support.
  • I thought OPF was (AI) squad based. How are the others doing. Can you build bigger units than squads? Can each human go into multiplayer as a squad commander with AI-squadmates? When you go into Multiplayer with more humans in a squad, does the second human get command when the boss is shot?

My thoughts go into the direction of RTS games like Wartime Command. But being in the the field myself is just a little more interesting than the god-mode. More like a general in his vehicle looking through his binoculars.

Not Hiaw, but I have tried most of them, own and play OFP and CoD.

IMO OFP is the only real sim in the crowd, the others are simply games, some of them good, others not so interesting.

There’s a world of difference in how the AI works between OFP and CoD, they might be dumb or really smart in OFP, in CoD they just keep coming enlessly until you manage to get beyond a certain point.

The possibilities to make missions in OFP is extremely big, but not all that easy to build the perfect mission, but if you put some time into it you will probably do well (I’m not interested enough to put a really great mission together, though I have done some simple ones).

There is a lot of mods, some so-and-so, others really good, and some extremely good. The only problem is sorting what is what. I’m thinking about going the simple route and get Nosigs standard pack. I trust them to put something good together. I’m downloading it to out ftp as I write.

There is bunkers etc as addons, I have done some fighting indoors, but it’s not OFP’s strong point.

Planes and artillery is available.

I’m not sure exactly how big units is possible to use in OFP, but they are pretty big anyway.

What version did you buy? I really recommend that you get OFP:Resistance if you bought the original or Gold version, if you got the Game Of The Year edition you already have it. And play through the campaigns, they are great fun.

OFP is for those who want a more realistic simulator, with big possibilities when it comes to building interesting missions etc. Can work pretty good online provided pings are low.
CoD is great fun, packet with action when playing offline, and fun online as well (and actually more realistic feeling online). Does the groundfighting part pretty good, air less good, but still acceptable for a FPS game.
BF1942 sucked IMO, not my cup of tea so to speak.
MoHaa (the little I’ve seen of it) seems to be somewhere between CoD and BF1942, but I might remember totally wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

May I answer this one too?

I can’t compare much with MoHaa, CoD and BF 1942 since I only played demos of those games. The main difference is (and that’s what put me off the other games) that in OFP you can move freely on the entire map so you are not resticted to “corridors”.

OFP has possibly the best mission builder I have ever seen in any game! It’s amazing what can be done with it: cinematics, scripts for complex AI behaviour, random triggers, interactive mission briefings etc. The only downside is that it may be difficult to use all those features. Still, setting up a simple mission isn’t that hard to do.

Bunkers etc weren’t included in OFP but there are mods that add them to the mission builder. Look for GFX707 Bunker Pack on one of the modding sites.
House fights are possible out of the box but not all houses can be accessed (depends on the map). There are however some clipping problems and sometimes you can walk through walls or get stuck on a staircase. But it’s great fun to hide in a church tower and snipe the bad guys

Mods. There are too many them! Campaigns, vehicles, weapons, scripts, effects… There’s even a Napoleonic mod! Don’t be tempted to try them all or you’ll spend more time downloading than playing. For most current mods you also need OFP Resistance (= official expansion pack). If you don’t have it, get it because it adds a lot to the original game (e.g. carry over weapons from previous missions).

Good places to look for mods and missions are
www.atwar.net
www.ofpec.com
www.ballisticaddonstudios.com

Long range support. This is handled by (addon) scripts that are programmed into the mission AFAIK. You can find a few at
thechainofcommand.net
Depending on mission design, you can call in artillery, airstrikes, evac helicopters, etc. Works well enough for me. Sometimes the AI has pathfinding problems but a lot depends on the way the mission was designed.

Finally, the OFP FAQ:
www.theavonlady.org

Also, OFP can be a great fun helicopter simulation

Thanks,

In the mean time I found the World builder and Object builder.
Starting to look around in the mission builder. Did place a soviet T-26 commanders tank, weapons and squads on a map. All from the Liberation 1941-1945 MOD. I guess I am most interested in the mission builder and the programming possibilities. In FB I sometimes made missions to watch them as a movie, the AI was running the show. Going to try that.

Going for the website and packages you mentioned. But how about that Avonlady. What is the joke behind the title?

Beats me. But the FAQ is very helpful

For me the best thing about OFP, OFP:Russian, OFP:Resistance was the campaigns and as Johan pointed out the freedom of play is a great feeling.

Graphically the game looks a little dated but if I was to buy the games now I wouldn’t be buying it because of the graphics. One great thing to try is build a mission and play it in coop mode online/LAN with your mates. One-shot death in OFP makes for very good stealth & tactical play with other humans

Sterling.

Bob I fear I can’t add anything more to these expertises already written. I like the game very much and still enjoy playing it offline alot  And LAN of 'course.

All this talk about OFP have made start playing it again, oh how time fly when you’re trying to sneak around the hard obstacles while at the same time kill as many russkies as possible without getting killed myself. Damn nice sim!

Here are some great missions that don’t require any addons (some require OFP Resistance though). You can find them at www.ofpec.com and www.atwar.net

Single missions:
Operation Axepoint (a classic!)
Iron Wall
Facile Ground
Take the Airport
The Big Push
Widows Ridge
Wrestling the Bear
Hasty Retreat
10th Air Cavalry

A good campaign is “Retaliation campaign: Peacekeeper” (Russian with English subtitles - 128MB!)

I also use the Y2K3 mod pack which includes the “best of” addons. http://ofp.gamezone.cz/_hosted/brat...site/index.html (330MB!)

I downloaded a dynamic campaign from the first link (yes, I read your post in 274 :p), and it works even if it’s a bit shaky.

Is that the Vietnam campaign? The real fun starts after you have captured a Landing Zone and you get some helicopters. Then it’s time to put on that Wagner record

No, it doesn’t use any addons as far as I can remember.

I did try some Vietnam missions on my old PC, but I hated the inaccuracy modeling they used for the 'nam addon.

Is there any way to let the missions I made run automatically? Can I watch the behaviour of the AI in real time and/or afterwards?

Mikke our dedicated server can host OFP too I think

And other games-

No not “Hollywood Skin Job”

Ming

Most camera scripts I found are for making of cutscenes, not for following soldiers in the field. No intentions to become a director.

At www.ofpec.com I found a helmetcam script that could be usefull. I think I give one squadmember that helmetcam. Another script attached a camera to a vehicle.

Simple camera commands seem to be a part of OPF. People expanded the simple commands.
