I made this movie to help new pilots learn how to improve their shooting - not that I’m the best shot, but I can do some editing!
It is also an experiment to see how you all take to animated characters in an IL2 movie. The characters are made with Moviestorm which does not yet have accurate WW2 figures, so please allow for the approximations. If this is well received then I and others may have a go at modding to get it right.
This was also my first serious attempt at using proper dialogue, not the forgiving R/T type, so thanks go to the actors for putting up with all my fussiness!
Please let me know what you think and if this technique could be used for more serious stories.

FILEFRONT XVID Version The highest quality version is which requires the XVID or DIVX codec and may cause flickering in WMP, in which case use the free VLC player.

For those who want more time to study the slides, download Bag The Hun or the German equivalent Horrido Des Jaegers Schiessfibel
Here are three of the exercises for quick study, with the three answers pages at the bottom:
Very nice Joe, it must’ve taken a lot of work. The music was excellent, just about right i think. I’m not sure how i ended up in the smart-arse’s role though?
Excellent Joe, very useful for pilots across all experience levels.
Well done.
WB.
Excellent Joe, I like it a lot. And its really useful too.
What a nice addition Joe, we 310/322 where just giving some extra attention on this subject
Cheers
Cool video m8!
The characters seem a bit awkward in some of their movements but I am sure that can be avoided by planning scenes to hide it.
Good instructional vid!
The scenery looks awesome! was this using one of the mods?!
Cheers all.
Thanks Insight - I do need to know how you all feel about these Moviestorm characters and the acting before trying more. Yep, they are quite “jerky” and I’m sure I could smooth out the animations with more practice. But, they will always be fake! Question is, can you the viewer accept that fakeness? You already accept the aircraft are fake even though they are very realistic, but can you also watch a serious story with these Moviestorm characters?
As for the scenery, that’s canonuk’s English Channel map mod. Awesome!
Also, I’ve had some comments that there was not enough time in the video for the slides, so I’ve ammended the first post to inlcude screenshots for more practice and the full manual too.
Fantastic video Joe, Did you add to the ground detail? Seems very dense my game is on excellent and I don’t have that kind of beauty?
That’s all part of canonuk’s modded map with extra textures. There’s a bunch of threads about that and other great looking mod maps over at SimHQ (when it’s back up).
Superb video! - but who’s the dick at the front giving the lesson?:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:
I like the figures walking on the Il-2 airfield at the start… can you ‘clone’ these and and use them to populate a busy airfield… say have fitters, WAAFs etc all walking about…?
You can kind of clone them, but the more characters, the slower the computer is at making them move. The outfits are also very limited though I may have a play with modding. The Moviestorm CEO is now seriously looking at a WW2 addon pack.
As for the acting dicks and smartasses…
You guys really did a fine job. The acting and dialogue is what makes turns a video into a story! One comment that backs that up from a viewer, “I was in the room with the pilots getting a lesson that I will use next time I fly.”
Cool Joe, liked it. Those animated figures are fine by me, although the stripey ties were annoying. I agree with the above comment, it was very briefing like.
Acting dicks? What sort of movie do you have in mind Joe?!
The voice acting was fine as far as I was concerned - a little disjointed in places but using the same guys over and over will cure that as they get used to it.
I think I could live with these characters in films, as you say we are used to the aircraft.
I think if the movement can get smoother on walking about etc it would be great - the standing about talking and gesticulating seems to work fine to me!
I would have put an Italian POW to man the target drones…:roflmao:
Very good training film indeed.
Its very helpful to me.
The people was a very nice refreshing add. Even if they look like dummies sometimes they add to the impression that its a film and not a game.
…And one of those trainees must have cancer…his hair is already falling off!:roflmao:
