14th March release date
Thanks for the heads-up Puff I’m in if it’s fairly realistic WW2
I tried the original but it seemed clunky and Klaustrophobic, this one looks like there might even be armour battles…
Ming
Nifty, I’ve already preordered it.
I played the mod version, it is clunky compared to CS, DOD, BF2 etc but its mean’t to be, to slow the pace down and 1 shot kills to make accuracy and teamwork count. I think it will be my next game for a while till something better comes out.
Sterling.
Its looking good, im going to give it a try.
For those who want more info: http://www.simhq.com/_land/fps_012a.html
The retail version will be released via Steam if you haven’t already worked out and so you would need to create an account for that - www.steampowered.com. It has been a while since I last played a game via Steam but I am glad to see they seem to have optimised it a bit and tweaked it so it runs better.
Im pre-loading the game at the moment - 75% done but can’t play till 14th, can still read the reviews though
EDIT - FYI that rewiew is of the last ‘mod’ version that was released a while back, the retail version has been given a good polish so it says and new features have been added - such as ‘resting’ all weapons on objects to improve accuracy, such as window ledges etc, even when your standing.
Sterling.
If you have Half Life 2 you should have steam already.
I used it to purchase Day of Defeat Source, works fine, updates games automatically to.
My only gripe with it is the friends list system is very poor, although i hear they are working on fixing this.
Certainly looks worth supporting, I’ll give it a go.
What’s the anticheat situation on it? They reckon the genre will attract a more “mature” following, but I’m still very wary after CoD2 came out without anticheat - you can’t play that online without half the players using wallhack and aimbot.
Yes Steam is good for me too JR no problems with it at all
Cheers for that info Sterling!
Must be good if SimHQ are reviewing it blimey 7 pages
“This is probably the first FPS I have ever seen that was designed ground-up by realism hawks. And it works!”
“You run around and jump around a lot and your character will get tired. No “bunny-hopping” in RO, either”
“One of the most detailed animations in the game happens with the “potato masher,” where you see the hands on screen unscrew the cap and pull out the bead that lights the fuse inside”
“…forget crosshairs”
“You can’t do a tank all alone. You need a crew-in the T-34/76, two others beside yourself”
“IL-2 On The Ground? You Bet!”
I am so in
Ming
Yup, looks interesting. I hope (but doubt) that maps will be of OFP scale.
They are not of OFP scale Mikke but some of the tank maps are huge, I mean really big, walking them just really isn’t an option, you jump on a half-track and have someone drive you to your objective.
Anti-cheat wise I have never really looked in to Peegee, when I played the MoD version I suppose that was where the more ‘mature’ players hung out and everyone was generally friendly. Now though being released via steam it will have a much larger audience and I just hope it doesn’t degrade it to much. Would be a shame if it did.
Anyway as for any actual anti-cheat programs supporting this game I am not aware of, but I think punkbuster may do something for it.
Nice thing about it though is that we can create our own servers and pw it if needs be, then the fun can really begin
Ming another quote that is so very true is that the first few times you play it you pretty much die and don’t know where from as the reviewer stated, it’s only once you learn the usual hidey-holes then you know where to look and start living a bit more
Sterling.
It uses Valve’s anticheat software , as far as Im led to believe. Check out this video from closed beta testing to see the game running.

I am still waiting for a demo and a review that explains that the gameplay is like OFP. I will go for a 3 km map but with less than that it gets claustrofobic (OPF standard is 12,8 km - I never understood that you could fly around such a small area).
Is multiplayer mixing humans with bots? How do they behave?
Is there a hierarchy in command? Can you order around AI groups lower in the chain of command?
Any chance of (in)direct fire support like a mortar team of 3 to 5 men moving around setting up and breaking down the 82 mm Brandt-Stokes mortar and hauling the mortar and the ammo. A cart please.

How is the rest of support like ammo supply organised (fuel, medical)? Wonderfull fountains of ammo everywhere? Or get the ammo yourself from the rear in time or surrender when you run out of it.
No it’s not OFP, it’s not mean’t to be. The vehicle maps have large enough areas to drive about in but its certainly no hide-seek OFP style.
I doubt they will release any demo since the game only costs roughly 15 pounds and is distrubuted via steam.
In the multiplayer servers there is very few servers that will run with AI, majority of servers are human only.
Ammo loadouts are historically accurate for each class. Your usually dead though before you get to use all your ammo.
The commander has control of a limited number of artillery strikes and can use them to his/her descretion during play.
If you have ever played something like Call of Duty or Day of Defeat then expect it to play something like these but with more realism and at a slightly slower pace. Watch the trailer you won’t see many people rushing around the place, that usually gets you killed quick.
Hope this helps.
Sterling.
I was actually quite happy with CoD2 - the map size and style of mission was OK. Yes, it was a bit “Rambo on benzedrine” rather than serious sim, but good fun nonetheless. What killed it for me was that within a week of release you couldn’t play online without the game being hacked to pieces - unless you wanted to join a clan and use a private server.
If RO is like a more “mature” version of CoD2 then I’ll really enjoy it. If it turns out OK, how many of you will be up for some European Ground Forces PBI (Poor Bloody Infantry) action?
Got the RO pre-purchase under Steam
Anyone see that Kung Fu Rag Doll demo? Laughed until I fell off the chair have a go it’s only a few minutes but it’s hilarious, very atmospheric boing-boing - it’s not the instructor from America’s Army put it like that
Ming
I have pre-ordered and downloaded it.
Im ready and reporting for duty on release day
I have pre-loaded also ^^
Sterling.
Look forward to seeing you guys on the fields. Remember that to use the sights on the tanks properly you need to set the range in mils. IS2 and T34 are approx 3m in height as is the Panther and Panzer IV , these show as 3mils high at 1000m wereas the tiger is slightly higher { not much} at close to 4m equating to 4mils in the sights.adjust your range using the ‘lean’ keys and then let rip. The axis tanks have the triangles set at two mil and 1 mil to allow estimation of the target range , still trying to work out the russian tanks yet lol
