Hello all,
Apologies for radio silence - usual story here of RL work deadlines getting in the way of simulation fun.
Hoping to get back in the cockpit again for a bit of MP flying,
I tested DCS Normandy last night with Spitfire IX in VR for 30mins for first time and it was bonkers! New lighting is glorious and map looks fantastic. Only complaint I would have is US style water towers and no churches.
Slightly frustrated I can’t get Il-2BoX to play nice with the Rift. (Kept getting micro jumping, disconnects/crashes after 5-10mins play). Advice was eventually to add a separate USB 3.0 card (approx. £17) as the Rift likes a lot of power from the USB. However, after 2 weeks of buying cables/adaptors PCI-E/SATA cords I have gave up trying to connect the card to my PSU. I have a 1200 Corsair so should be plenty of spare juice to power a 3-slot USB card, but every time I connect it, there is an ominous click and the PC refuses to power up. Remove cable – fine. Been driving me mad as I can’t figure it out and those who do get it working say Il-2BOX in VR is even better than DCS.
Where are we up to?
Welcome back!
Hope you can sort your problems!
PS also Banzai has the Vive!
May be he can help you!
Nice to see that you are alive my friend
Lets see if we can’t find a spare mount for you
Since one of the recent updates the Rift has not liked BoX. I’m having problems with it, so I’ve gone from playing it all the time to not at all. I’m not going to play it with Track IR, I’m going to have to wait for a patch that fixes it. DCS is still working well with VR though.
Hey Flash, good to hear from you.
VR in BOS is “cleaner” and smoother for me than DCS, which is just “smudgy” compared. (I’m going to get some glasses inserts for the rift at some point!!)
I did get those micro pauses, but I’ve moved the devices around and been playing around with graphics setting quite a lot.
One thing that really helped was I kept banging my virtual head and seem to cause the micro stutters, so I amended the SteamVR text file. I don’t get them now. - These are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr
I’ve also just updated my processor to an I7 7700 which seems to have helped in BOS but not in DCS (1080 GPU).

The headbanging thing is fecking annoying, it lines up with the end of the headset and not where your actual head is. It made it hard to look around.
Hey Flash,
Welcome back - your personal plane is waiting for you in my Normandy training server
I can host tonight if interested
