This is the last movie I enjoyed at the great Lockeed Martin IMAX Teathre at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.
The movie is absolutely good, as it explains waht is Operation Red Flag on board of an F-15 Eagle. Watching it on an IMAX screen is amazing! Moreover is teaching a lot of things about air combat, teamworking , and good communications. A good school for all the fellow pilots!
But if you can survive iven with a smaller screen, and if you are familiar with UTorrent, you can easily get it. Simply digit on your browser this string: IMAX Fighter Pilot Red Flag Torrent
Enjoy the movie!
Got given it on DVD - an agree its got some awesome pieces of aerial photography in it… I envy you seeing it on a huge IMAX screen!
However, I though it was not ‘ruined’ but a bit ‘let down’ by a few inaccuracies in spite of being billed as a ultra realistic look at what goes on in Nevada.
Particularly:
-
They sexed-up the inside (and the display screens) of the AWACS to make them more Battlestar Galactia and way more ‘cooler’ than it actually is…
-
Some of the in-cockpit (low-level) HUD shots are fakes (ie CGI HUD over film) - (i think the HUD is showing some silly altitude or speed which gives it away;)). - But why not use the real thing? Possibly they needed it ‘speeded up’ to create a better sensation of speed.
-
Explosions too have been ‘Hollywoodised’ to create fire and flame from old tanks/trucks on the range…
-
Finally some of the formations - (and this in the niggling thing for a student of air combat) are obviously parade ground tight finger fours, rather than, in reality F-15s spread out laterally in a wall with probably 1km or 1nm spacing between them. It gives an unrepresentative view of modern air combat to see these close formations which look great for the camera but which have bugger-all tactical use… (There’s also a B-2 flying in daylight which made me chuckle as well…)
That said, its well worth watching, looks fantastic and has a few interesting snippets of info… (did you spot the female Israeli pilot climbing into that two-seat F-16I…;))
I agree on your comments.
There are also some good points, particularly the explaination of the C.O. about the risks created by incorrect radio communication and risks of loosing lifes.
In the first briefing room scene you can also see Italian pilots (the pilot eagle patch is on the right side, while americans and british pilots wear it on the left side) with a Blach Cat patch on their green flying suits.
Yes, 51° Stormo pilots !
