Reading this now. The guy was a real tough guy, a great commander and great pilot.
I find the book lacking in air combat descriptions, in particular in WWII. Still a good read, it gives you a detailed description of the life of a pilot in war, and in peace too.
There is one scene that really surprised me. An F-4 Phantom got hit in North Vietnam, both engines flamed out, no altitude enough to reach friendly territory. A second Phantom told him to lower the arrestor hook, and then proceed to, painfully, push the Pantom in front with his canopy pushing the hook!!! This was enough to get both crews to bail over Laos and not N. Vietnam.
