I am looking into an easy upgrade for my gamerig in order to improve my gaming on COD. Since money is an issue such upgrade would take a few months from decision to purchase.
The question is, Is it feasible compared to a complete upgrade of CPU+MB+RAM in terms of price/performce? Watt/Performance?
My current rig have the following hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 2x3GHz, 6MB (TDP 65W)
8GB RAM
nvidia GTX 260896 MB GDDR3
Cosair TX520W
2 x SSD
SB XF-i Soundcard
My idea is to upgrade the CPU only. I want to avoid an additional upgrade of the PSU.
Since IL-2 depends on the CPU MHz, I will prefer to have the same amount of GHz.
My motherboard supports the following CPU’s http://www.gigabyte.eu/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2728
I was thinking of the following CPU’s:
• Core2 Quad Q9650 3.00 GHz , 12MB (TDP 95W)
• Core2 Quad Q9550 2.83 GHz, 12MB (TDP 95W)
• Core2 Quad Q9550s 2.83 GHz, 12MB (TDP 65W)
I dropped overclocking many years ago along with watercooling. These days I prefer stability. Any idear if or how my E8400 would do with my non-standart cooler?
Same here mate. But it is good to know that one has power in reserve
Something like this ‘Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550’ £149.99 inc VAT?
LGA775 is a special CPU socket, no legs- contacts (ball grid) only. So an LGA775-equipped motherboard. I am running a Gigabyte motherboard EX58-UD5. This type of mobo needs ‘special’ (different) RAM sticks, take care to investigate physical compatibility of CPU and RAM sticks. I know you are replacing the CPU but for general info
I was looking into buying a i7 and RAM used, but this would require a whole mb for my part due to my case. So cost would escalate.
FYI: I am old schole and have always been building my own gamerigs. But since I have not build a pc for a while, my knowledge are not up to date.
I am not ‘married’ to a CPU vendor but I look into long term cost of my equipments powerrequirements since I also use my gamerig as a personal computer. Electricity is expensive in Denmark .
Starfire, i think the first think you have to upgrade is your GPU, at least with 2 gb ram. Nepe, Blitz and many of 51 got the ATI 6950 and they are flying very very well, this is the Blitz rig:
Op. Sys.: Windows 7 PRO x64 + XP PRO
MB: ASUS P5Q SE2
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8200 2,66 GHz
RAM: 4,00GB
GPU: Asus 6950 - 2GB RAM
HD: internal 500GB + 750GB, external 2TB
and he has more then 40 fps over London
I don’t know your OS, I have also win 7 64bit and is running great, full consider each patch is improving a lot the performance,
p.s. some of the Ati 6950 can be bios-flashed and became like the 6970.
ok, I’m tryin to get some info of Blitz report from old post:
the graphic settings he was using are:
all on Hi settings, shadow and building on medium ( i do the same, almoust no big change on screen but a lot of fps improved)
ssao on
vsync on
i don’t know antialisaing
he’s reporting, online while hosting average 25/30 fps during fight
Blitz, nel caso hai qualche nuovo benchmark su cod in termini di settings e fps, come ti gira con il tuo pc?
Its an interesting point as I thought in flight sims the cpu was the most important due to the calculations going on. I have a Q9550 with a GTX570 and pretty getting decent frames but not really smooth. I’d hope to go for an i5 Sandybridge to help push the GTX570, but will cost about £600 with the mobo/ram upgrade too, but holding off to see how the patches improve the speed and most importantly the community & EAF start to fly it in greater numbers.
The idear sounded great, since most websites said it should be easy to get 3,6 out of the 3,0GHz with the standard cooler.
I even have some quality DDR2 witch are able to achieve 4-4-4-12 timing.
Unfortunately the MB are a corporate type MB and all kinds of BIOS fidling are out of the question, not even people making overclocking BIOS’ have been able to make one that can change Bus time
“I was out of altitude, airspeed and idears all at the same time”
Starfire, under my responsability…trust me, first step with your rig, change GPU at least with 2gb ddr ram…then youll see…ok ok I’m moving to Australia now:roflmao::roflmao:
We are still way over my maximum limit for any upgrade. The VGA cost more than 240 Euro here. Du to my small case I need a referece card, so the cost will raise to 263 Euro+ for the cheepest.
My E8500 is Overclocked to 3.65gig I don’t know if you have the same Mobo?(Asus P5KPL-CM) but mine is easily overclocked by going into the Bios and increasing the percentage of overclocking you want to achieve.
The problem are the lack of setting in the BIOS. Not the CPU.
I have no access to memory timing, bus clock, nor CPU setting. Not even when I use the special CTR+F1 setting (for advanced features).
The BIOS is completly locked for overclocking
BTW: It is Gigabyte (as I wrote in the first post )
