Eww that smell..

Well I turned on my machine the other day and heard a pop well it died and that there was a waft of funk coming from my PSU:mad:. Now I get no fans only a light on motherboard it simply wont power up. I disconnected all the connections for the PSU and plugged it in,turned it on and the fan does not run. Is there any other way of finding out that its the PSU without laying out the cash for a new one?

System Specs:
3.15 gig INTEL Core 2 Duo/ Asus P5KPL-CM, MoBo/ 4Gig Corsair DDR-RAM
/ ATI Radeon 4750/ Creative Sound, Audigy. The PSU was a CaseGears 650W

Have you got a volt/multi meter?

pop

Sounds like an electrolytic capacitor might have shorted, if it actually was a pop! (maybe even a real bang) not a phut I mean

waft of funk

Even more like a cap gone short then, look for a bulge in the top of a capacitor’s can. If funk means what I think it means

Is there any other way of finding out that its the PSU

Only by substituting another known-good power supply, it’s very hard to do any work on a switched-mode power supply as everything’s crammed into a tiny space and no one works on them to component level it’s considered a module

But a visual inspection, check the motherboard for anything obviously burnt or melted, sniff test there too near the power (chunky) components

Nightmare for you Oz, your turn in the barrel :frowning:

Ming

Well its confirmed the PSU is dead. When I get enough Denari I will be buying a new one, just hopefully it took nothing with it.
