12:30AM? You planning on breaking in?
12:30pm would be a little late for me I think but I will try and pop along to say hi before the day kicks off.
Will not be there (again) this year, but I will try to plan it for next year!
I will be bimbling along on Saturday
maybe next year for me.
this year I need your photos
I intend to come along next year, I hope to be bringing at least one fully restored Hurricane IIB with me
Whats going on?
P51+Skyraider collision and Dr.1 crash??
Found the pictures to it Very sad, but happily all pilots are ok.
I hope Carlsons Dr.1 isn’t damaged that much.
Not a great end to the weekend really but nobody was hurt which is the important thing.
Let’s see if we can avoid speculating on the details - that is being done to death elsewhere.
The video is up on youtube already.
Spoke with one of the pilots today, not happy bunny thats for sure.
This one?

Which pilot?
Looking at the vid the mustang seems ok, the damaged part is the wing tip of the Sky Raider seen floating down. I would like to know what damage the mustang had for him to bail out.
Really sad to see the demise of any old warbird, but at least no casualties.

Just behind the ‘Stars n Bars’ is were the Skyraiders wing dug in, looks as if the P51’s back is broken
Thanks Chris, bloody hell I would have jumped as well.

Here is another vid showing the impact very clear.
Good he made it out, thats not too far from being too low already.

I am not too sure of the exact layout ouf the mustangs fuselage but if it follows general construction standards (which I am sure it will because its an American aircraft) then running the length of the fuselage will be at least 4 main structural longerons, 2 upper and 2 lower. Attached to these will be the various internal frames of the fuselage that give the skin its shape and strength. Looking at the point of impact I would say it has almost certainly severed the two lower longerons which gives the fuselage the broken look that Kris refers to. The a/c may of been flyable in that state but very risky.
Whats also a distict possibility and without particularly intimate knowledge of the mustangs internal layout is that the control cables may well of been severed or coolant pipes destroyed. Judging by how quickly the pilot vacated the a/c I think he probably did lose his controls because I wouldn’t of thought that he could of assesed the damage that quickly and bail out. I’ll bet the impact on the aircraft/cables ripped the stick and pedals from his hands and shortly later the stick/pedals would either be jammed or floppy as they no longer connected to the elevators and or rudder. I expect this is why he got out so fast, his reactions certainly saved his life. All credit to the skyraider pilot for having the courage to bring her back to base, he now joins the long list of vietnam and korean war veterans he brought home a heavily damaged skyraider, 6ft of wing is a big lump to lose.
The main thing of course is that everyone is ok and eventually in some form or another both of those machines will fly again.
Yes, that’s a good guess I think.
Good thing they all made it out ok with no casualties.
Certainly be interesting to read the AAIB report when its published.
Also very surprising that the Mustang did not ‘fireball’ on impact, such is the way with these old machines theres not normally much left after the impact and normally inevitable fire.
Looking through Kris’ video again he was certainly very low when he baled. The videos I had seen up till today stop just after the canopy is jettisoned.
The pilot (Rob Davis) has just been interviewed on Anglian news, he said he was at 500ft when he decided to bail and 200ft when he opened the chute.
At first they thought his arm was broken but it transpired its just bruised.
Better film
Very impressive (and clear) video
