Dead graphic card?

A few days ago, in my one and only SEOW, screen froze. I could hear the sound as if nothnig happened, but could not get back to desktop.

ATI 4850 52 MB

Hard reboot, columns of white dots on BIOS. Install 10.6 drivers. Same problem. Get back to 10.5.

Today I test with Black Shark in windowed mode, so I can check temps. At 1280x860 everything ok. But at 1320x1024 (or something like that) frozen again. Nothing wrong with temp, 68ºC when frozen. Again same thing with sound, I can hear it changing with the track normally, but I dont have any response from PC.

Hard reboot. Now Windows desktop is corrupted completely. I can do Ctrl-Alt-Del, but can´t see the task Manager. All I can do is close session and then reboot from that screen.

Linux working ok, though I didnt tested any 3D intensive app.

Try to get into windows safe mode. Ok, at least I see the desktop now. But I cant uninstall ATI Catalyst in safe mode. Can I? Should I start looking for a new card?

Damn.

My first guess would be a driver problem. You should be able to uninstall drivers from safe mode.

No, Im not able to.

You dont have access to Windows Installer srevice in safe mode

Windows 7 64bit, btw.

And if its is a driver problem, why the dots in the BIOS screen?

Do you have onboard graphics maybe Nepe to try? Maybe rule out some things

But anyway, the card is running your SVGA screen from native SVGA drivers in the card’s BIOS when you boot up if you have no onboard graphics, and the card’s drivers are not running yet

Check the graphics card is seated firmly in its socket, a regular array of dots means clocks are lost somewhere and classically this can be a hardware fault of that type, check all video connections are solid too

Thanks chaps

But no joy, card is firmly seated, but no matter what I do, uninstalling, reinstalling etc, I have no Windows, just in safe mode. Thanks that I have Linux, and it works.

Anyway its time to look for a new card, the bad part is that my card is still around 100€, and I don’t want to spend more well after SoW comes out.

Suggestions for a new card?

Looks like I must spend around 120€ just to get a new card with the same performance (GTS250) as the old one.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Or nearly double if I want a GTS260, that doesnt give nearly as much as double performance.
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Sometimes I hate computers

Look like the card is working in 2D (linux desktop, or windows in safe mode), and not 3D (win7 aero desktop).

Cause Win7 desktop is 3D, right?

Hi Nepe,
I have two graphic GTS 250 cards with appeared in SLI and provided with 1 Gyga Bite of RAM DD3 the one.
Heartily recommend them to you, if you can take.

bye!!

Voss

Thanks Voss

I didnt want to spend much now, and wait 1 year after SoW is out. But I see that, to stay as I was with the old card, I need to spend more than 100€, and thats driving me mad. We are in crisis, dont you Nvidia know?

Pfiuuuuu

Still in warranty :slight_smile:

But that means that I will be grounded for 2-3 weeks :frowning:

I paid 155€ almost 2 years ago, and now it still costs more than 100€!!!
What the hell!!
