I gather that DDR3 is the newest technology but why the price difference between DDR2 and 3?
I’m just putting together a new(ish) PC thats being built on a budget and the only thing missing now is memory. But this has lead me to think about a new mobo at the same time. The purpose of the new machine is to play RoF, if it can play CoD on minimal settings then that will be a bonus. However as I’ve only been enjoying IL2 on max settings for the last 18-24mths I’m sure it will be many years yet before I can fully appreciate CoD
Anyways back to the prices of memory, heres a few links
DDR2

DDR3 seems to be cheaper than DDR2, is DDR2 better than DDR3?
I’ve got 6GB of DDR3 Classic so of course it’s better
But seriously, the main thing to bear in mind mate is to make absolutely sure that the memory sticks will actually physically fit your motherboard… check carefully before buying any RAM sticks

Gareth, the price difference is based on supply and demand. Ram is like the stock Market. Last year it was cheap this year it’s up. I just sold 8 gig of Kingston hyperx, I bought it 18 months ago for £72, sold it for £100. You won’t find any other technology that will do that for you.
In response to you question though, you need DDR2. if you do change the board, you’ll do well to find a socket 775 that will take DDR3.
Thanks chaps, I was having a look at the board below but I’m not sure about the cost, whatever I spend now delays the new machine for CoD although the long range financial forecast looks set for a CoD machine at christmas

I only found that board by trying to find a P45 chipset with socket 775
EDIT: The wife, sorry finance minister has just vetoed my plans for an upgrade on this machine, which means DDR2 is the way forward
