I found the last developer diary update probably one of the most interesting posts about the types of FM’s used in flight sims. It answered a lot of questions for me about how the development of FM’s has occurred over time across a variety of sims. Hope they publish similar reports soon about other aspects of flight sim development.
This weeks Dev diary Han talks about how the AI is coded.
There’s an overview of the AI in RoF and how that works. The bit about the flight sim community perceiving correct AI behaviour as a bug is quite interesting. The AI is programmed not to attack in certain situations which would be suicidal, despite the players repeated attempts to send the AI to its certain death with in game commands.
Good to see that they are making such a big overhaul of the AI. Combat behaviour was/is indeed ROFs biggest Ai-flaw. Diving circles till treetop-level, no matter what plane.
Looking forward to the Ai improvements, they sound really good.
