Anyone interested in showing me the ropes today? I presume I should start flying the P-51 to get used to the sim.
I got a custom made mission from a buddy, it has all the WWII planes plus Sabre and MiG-15. We could try that out.

I’ve got:
A-10C (good fun, but haven’t had time to actually get down to it, takes more time then I have, in that way I envy your unemployment ;))
FCS (haven’t actually flown any of them, just started one or two very briefly)
P-51 (flown it a bit, but not enough by far, my DCS stick setting is setup for the A-10)
Fw-190 (don’t think I have even been in the air in it yet! :()
F-86 (have flown it a bit, one of the easier to do something with, though it can still bite you!)
CA (haven’t even tried it whatsoever)
The C101 is actually a bit tempting, but I have way more modules than I have time to fly, even as little as once a month.
You’d be better trying to fly the Sabre or Mig-15 first as the P-51 can be tricky. I’d recommend always learning the ramp start procedures.
Go through the training missions (if there are any). Puff already posted up a good link to Chucky’s guide for the Sabre as there is no manual yet (its in beta) - http://forum.europeanaf.net/showthread.php?25527-Good-DCS-F86-F-guide. This will give you enough to get started.
Practise on your own first, just doing basics with any of the aircraft should keep you busy for the next few days.
With all of the DCS modules, set up your HOTAS as best you can. In single player you can amend your setup. Small steps. Read the manuals (if there are any) and pause often. Break each element down. The A-10 seems complicated and daunting at first, but eventually becomes second nature. There’s heaps of tutorials with accompanying missions out there.
Is it best to buy these through Steam at a later sale or now? basically what is the benefit of going via steam?
What do most of the EAF lads fly, P51 or jets? Plus what is fairly easy to get going with, I prefer prop stuff.
Cheers
You’ll get different answers depending on who you ask.
Personally I think buying them through the ED website with an ED DCS world install is better, as you can use these keys on a steam install of DCS if you want. This means you get the best of both with the discounts… You can’t use Steam bought keys on an ED DCS world install.
Prop stuff, go for the P51, though to get you started the Sabre and/or Mig 15 would be better. Depends on how much time you want to put in as well. For example the Mig21 is stunning and easy to get airborne, but the ancillary systems take time to learn.
I stay away from the FC3 stuff as it’s not “clickable” cockpit and the flight model isn’t as good.
I am also sticking with ED as for the reason what Keets was telling.
I think the p51 is a good starter because of the price and training missions what comes with it. Next the Sabre as a starter for jets, though there isn’t provided a training campaign, you can get along with Chucks guide
What I’ve seen, all people within the EAF who fly DCS own these two planes
Thanks for your advice chaps.
I’m thinking to focus most of my time in DCS on learning the A-10C, Sabre and P-51. I have all the other planes as back ups or to fly as opposition, but my focus will lie on these three planes. That should be plenty of work enough.
I’ll greatly appreciate any help with these aircraft. Would be lovely to have a session where we all can team up or go head to head.

Keets, I think is the other way around? Steam keys can be used in standalone, but when you buy in http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop it clearly says
Notice: Keys purchased here can not be used to activate DCS products on Steam!
He he, fat fingers, you’re right. I even typed as much in the Steam thread last week. I knew what I mean though and so did Pax.
So better to wait for a steam sale?
Also is there any interest in doing a DCS session?
Just found I can still get a couple of planes plus beta access/Normandy map with my old kicker starter pledge. Cool.
Spit ix of course and even though I can get it cheap the mustang, can’t see me flying the more expensive Jerry stuff anyway.
I’m always interested although I will be busy for the next week + but when I get back lets have a go. I own all Modules that Stuntman mentioned and more.
No Swoop, you will hardly ever see a Steam sale, go with the Stand Alone.
I would love to join a session.
About aircraft, I want to focus on the A-10C, F-86 Sabre and P-51. Three aircraft should be more than enough to dig into. When the two Spits, Martlet and Kittyhawk comes out, I will focus on them too.
I don’t really fancy all the tech and subsystems, so except for the A-10C, I’m primarily interested in low tech or pure “stick time” / manual piloting aircraft. WWII piston aircraft and first generation jets from the Korean era are my preference. I have also the 109, MiG-15 and FC3 aircraft to stand in as opposition.
Whatever we fly, I hope we can focus our sessions on Korean war, WWII and the A-10C. I will be happy to fly anything else of course, I bought many aircraft to stand in as opposition. Still I will be more than satisfied to become good with only a single technologically complex aircraft, as the A-10C. The rest of my time I want to foucs on stick time / visual flight rules aircraft.
My list of DCS content:
A-10C
Flaming Cliffs 3
F-86 Sabre
MiG-15
P-51D
109K-4
Combined Arms
A really good start I would say Stuntman. I’m torn between flying DCS and CoD as my flying time is somewhat limited (I’m considering forcing my GF to use the old laptop instead of my flying PC for her homeworks :p), CoD is usually ready to go, DCS would take some joystick programming/switching time before use, but…
P51 and the sabre for starters for me, I love the warthog but will need some serious time to get into that.
Sale over so only p51 for now.
To bad. We might have a go tonight in the p51. The TF version of it is free to fly for any one who want to try it.
The aircraft are so expensive when not on sale (for my skinny wallet lol), might just fly the TF-51 with us to get familiar with the exact same systems? Just no guns.
Heads up gentleman
