Again: hosting problems

But different this time

Windows 7 64 bit
Optic Fiber, 3Mbps down/ 300 kbps up
Firewall disabled

I open both Flaming Cliffs (port 10308) and IL2 (21000) ports in my router.

When I check from this page http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/ (with programs running on background), port 10308 is open, but not 21000

I’ve tried with both modded and unmodded IL2 installs.

Any idea? please…

Hi Nepe, what router do you have?

Have you forwarded the port to a specific ip address? Check you opened the port up for UDP and not TCP. (sucking eggs caveat on all that). Sometimes routers associate a service with the port, is the service enabled??

I know it might sound stupid, but have you upgraded to the newest firmware? There might be a problem with the current one.
As Keets, if you tell us the router we have the ability download the manual and provide more than generic questions

Many thanks for your help mates.

The router is a Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco) EPR2320R2. I can’t find a firmware for it, and the one it has its from 2006.

TCP and UDP ports both open.

I tried with “DMZ host” option on, and giving a static internal IP (“Fixed CPE IP assignment”) to my IL2 machine.

Everything to no avail.

I made one more test. As Flaming Cliffs is opening its port, 10308, I changed IL2 port in the conf.ini:

[NET]

localPort=10308
remotePort=10308

This should make IL2 open port 10308 instead of 21000, and guess what? Yes, IL2 can not open that port, but FC2 can…

Cool, isn’t it? I guess that means that the problem is related to IL2 and not the router? But I tried with 2 different versions of IL2. And I was able to host, not so long ago.

Way back I posted this thread on how to host.

Your router is listed here

Go through the how to host thread and use the UDP tool in there to see if the 21000 port is open.

Leave the conf.ini as it doesn’t open the port on router, it’ll only specify to the application which port to “listen” for packets. As nobody else would be using port 10308 for IL2, you would never receive any packets anyway.

Thank you very much Keets

The part about port forwarding is ok, its like I always did.

But setting a static IP does not work, I lose internet connection, cant ping anything outside the internal network.

And UdptTestTools is not working in my PC (Win7 64bits)

The part about conf.ini and 10308 was just to check if IL2 would open a different port. Like “why FC2 opens the port but not IL2? if FC2 opens it, that means the port is opened in the router”

Using now a program called PFPortChecker, which allows to check both TCP and UDP.

I made some progress. About opening ports in the router, looks like the forwarding only works if you only have the IP once in the list. If you have it twice it does not work.

So, I open both ports, use the tool and both TCP and UDP open!

Now I launch IL2 server and then…TCP is open, UDP closed!!!

Mikke can we get a “Im getting mad” smiley in here?

Edit:

But there is more. I installed IL2 4.08m in another PC, and one time it did see the different version (4.09m) of the server!! So at least once it was able to connect to server.

Then changed IL2 port to 10308. Same thing. Ports are open until I launch an IL2 server, and then UDP port closes. And again, using the other PC, the first time I tried to connect it saw the version, but not the next 10 times I tried.

Nepe, if you are using HL to launch the server, check your hlpro.ini file. The settings in here overwrite your conf.ini file settings. I’ll check my file once I’m online this evening.

Thank you Keets. I am not using HL, just a direct IP connection. The less things involved, the better.

Looks like IL2 should not be running when I check ports (said by admin at portforward.com). That would explain why UDP gets closed when I launch the server.

Looks like I solved it.

Not completely sure, but I think the problem comes from the SW of the router. If I add more than one IP in port forwarding, Ive problems; if aI add more than 1 port, too. So now I only have 1 port forward, for my IP and 21000.

We will see if it keeps working the following days.

Thanks Keets and Starfire for your help

Nice one. I’ll download the manual for your router and see if I can work out why it’s doing that.

At least you’re working

After a bit of searching I found the manual Here. There’s nothing in there which should exhibit the behaviour your seeing, so it may be a s/w issue.

Have you tried resetting to factory defaults and configuring all the config again from scratch?

I tried looking for a firmware update, but couldn’t find one at all.

Thank you a lot Simon

The reset to defaults, that’s what I did whenI fixed it. Last 2 times I tried I was able to host, so lets hope everything is ok now.

Thx again mate
