IE not talking to the net ...

I had a cry for help from a neighbour …

He’s been having problems connecting to the internet, and originally blamed his ADSL modem/router (a wired + wireless Belkin).
We’ve sorted that out, but things aren’t right yet.

He has two lap tops; lap top A will talk to the internet, so (I think) we can rule out the modem as a cause of trouble. A talks both wired and wireless.

Lap top B doesn’t want to play:
B can see the modem through ipconfig
B can ping the modem
Lap top A can ping B
Lap top B can not ping A (I suspect A is blocking pings)

None of Internet Explorer, FireFox, nor Outlook Express work on laptop B.
B has a copy of Norton 360(?) running though that is not updating.

Is there anything I can look at to sort this out for him?
Thanks in advance

Somethings to think about

Can B work wired?
Can B work wireless?
Can B login to the router admin?
Is dhcp enabled on the router?
Is there mac address filtering on the router?
Can B ping the external address of the router?
Can it ping any external addresses?
Can you disable Norton and try?

Thanks Brig:

Can B work wired?
No, except it does ping, and can be pinged

Can B work wireless?
Gave up waiting, no

Can B login to the router admin?
No (IE blocking?)

Is dhcp enabled on the router?
Don’t know

Is there mac address filtering on the router?
Shouldn’t be, I was finally called in after the router was reset.

Can B ping the external address of the router?
Haven’t tried - the ISP is Tiscali

Can it ping any external addresses?
Haven’t tried

Can you disable Norton and try?
I’ll try disabling Norton - I failed this evening, but it was late

I’ll try those tests tomorrow night and give furter answers

Can B work wired?

No, except it does ping, and can be pinged

What IP address has B got?
For a quick fix set a static IP.
something like 192.168.1.xx or 192.168.0.xx depending on the subnet the Belkin uses.

Uninstall Norton totally … its a biatch of a proggy that can cause more problems than it protects, I wouldn’t be suprised at all to hear once its totally uninstalled (and all related services) that it connects perfectly

Have you allowed the needed IP adresses (from router and the range given by DHCP) in the firewall, if one is installed?

Thanks everybody.
Brig, it picks up 192.168.1.3 when wired to port 3 so that makes sense.

Guys, I’m going to leave this until Saturday, when a) I have a brain (hope) and b) I am not flying.

B is getting it’s IP from the router, so this statement is crucial

B has a copy of Norton 360(?) running though that is not updating.

As Majik has stated Norton really is shite
