Grand Theft Auto 4

Make sure to turn on subtitles or you’ll never get the raasclaat mission done with the Jamaican dealer wtf is he going on about

DVD version, no trouble with it running 1600x1200 at acceptable framerates. Immersive, beautiful city simulation. Very beautiful almost Toy Story rendering and a very lively city. Streets under sheeting rain, not seen that before. Shiny thing sorted out: shiny paint, shiny streets. Looking good for plane sims any year now. Be quiet at the back shiny is very important for realism

Don’t rush to get it though, people have been reporting problems getting it running and a patch is on the way. Plus it’s Securom again and a 15GB install. There’s an NVidia driverset out that bumps up framerate quite a bit. Needs DX10 and a fiver says there’ll be a DX10 patch after the initial peak of sales dies down

I’ve had this for the Xbox for a while now and its brilliant as always. I’d recommend this game to everyone here. Nothing like beating a granny to death or mowing down a sidewalk full of civvies. Oh and the radio stations are always good for a laff too.

If you’ve never played any of the GTA series, i’d recommend you start now.

Does GTA4 support the use of steering wheels and pedals? I remember Mafia with great fondness and I’m currently playing GTA Vice City (I’m poor again after buying a house so I’m going through my back catalogue:) - I didn’t realise how many games I’ve bought over the years and never finished!).

I like these driving games but the lack of a steering wheel really puts a damper on them. Currently looking at NFS:Undercover but the initial reviews don’t seem too good. Roll on Mafia2!!

Cheers,

WB.

Keyboard here WB but there’s a patch out soon and with that more support for drivers for hardware IIRC. It’s a very console-type port unfortunately - but they’re working on it. It’s a game I wouldn’t mind starting over if I lost the one save that’s possible to back up so far

Back to 50 dollars, no weapons eek where’s that backup aaaggh! I really should sleep in my own bed more

Gah! All these games! so litle time!

Tried it. the amount of hurdles you have to go through before you can actually play the thing! Activation - check. Play? no. Register and Install Social club- what? ok. Done. play? Yes - no! Install Winblows live first. Ok done. play? yes, but you must be online to load or save.
What the heck!/?

Finally, after asking on their forums i found you can play offline if you select an Offline Profile, but you still must start thru Social Club and Winblows Live! And they say they don`t want to encourage pirating!

Sorry for the rant, but I would`ve thought twice before getting this game as the box only warns you about activation, not the rest of the guff.

Of course, not much space to say what i think of the game itself, but…

It`s very, very good. the graphics are a bit shoddy, but the sheer work put into it is quite incredible. It really is like being in a real american City like New York. there must be a zillion animations of people of all kinds doing their own thing.

I really try to play as a respectable criminal, I wont hurt innocent people. I try to abide by the law if I dont need to any dodgy jobs, but when you have to it`s involving - and even realistically scary.

For example, I was speeding away from a job when i hit an oncoming car. We both swung about and hit the wall. There were two women in the car. One stumbled out holding her stomach in pain while the other woman just lay, head against the steering wheel with the horn continuously sounding… her eyes closed, mouth open.

The fighting is pretty grusome too. Arm, leg stomach shots bring down opponents realistically and sometimes they`ll pleade for you not to finish them off.

And there are loads of normal every day things you can do and much of my time is spent just calling the (suspicious ) girlfriend or going to play darts with the m8s.

Radio, Tv, etc are incredibly well done.

Voice acting is incredibly good. The rastafarian Ming mentioned for example is SPOT ON (my brother is a rasta…hmm). the Polish type accents are also pretty on too.

This game has had one helluva a lot of work put into the Human side of a metropolitan city!

I hate MS making the new games need LIVE gold membership! We’ve been playing games online for years and now MS wants us to pay for the priviledge!!!

Phew it’s not just me who sees this as a Matrix contender then

On the dating site and then Glinchworm’s photos

‘Comment on Glinchworm’s photos?’

DippyDave says

‘You will die alone.’

The whole thing cracks me up all the time, spot on Peacemaker same here mate and the story told through (ingame) cutscenes is absorbing “Just shot up a little ahm ok. Will you bring me back a pack of adult diapers?” WTF do I get adult diapers at three o’clock in the morning

Shot over a flyover in a bike chase and landed in the river, swam around and climbed out. Doesn’t appear to be any invisible walls anywhere, convincingly Matrix.

Bit of a Lara croft too isn`t he? (Nico that is).

Like a rat up a drainpipe yes he’ll tackle anything

At last I’ve sussed to get back to the safe house to save my progress

Nightmare without proper Save and Quicksave slots - consoleitis - and only 12 slots anyway. Still it makes it challenging getting back home without jumping a red light in case a cop car’s nearby. 30 mph all the way, model citizen

Bump off a load of guys, taking over- and then doing taxi runs? Don’t feel right man aam bedder dan dis. Call me

Checkout the airport. At first I thought it was an off-map place, but you can actually get to it. VERY impressive. You have the Boeings take off and landing and you can drive up to them. They are enormous. I decided to use the strip as a raceway!

But beware, the Police get extremely, and I mean extremely upset.

Airport? Ah for the armoured helicopter you get if you murder all the pigeons for Ken Livingstonic

I saw this pigeon sitting under the highlight that usually means a pickup, it wouldn’t move and I’m not in the habit of slaughtering the wildlife on a whim. Turns out it must die for the chopper and now I have to remember where I saw it so I can see the cloud-of-feathers animation <tries not to look at the youtube pigeons tracker>

There’s a subway too apparently

Just needs a Second Life mod now

WARNING!

This Patch screws with your other sticks! My character is unplayable because the game gets confused with the other controllers now, even rudder pedals! it`s unplayable! I cannot even uninstall the Patch because of Winblows Live!

It will work if you take out ALL your controllers, but you have to do this EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Unplayable. I dont know if youll get the same, but just a warning.:(

Same here Peacemaker so I bought a wireless XBox controller (noticing a bit of RSI) and of course it won’t work, the fabulous Microsoft operating system has no idea that the Microsoft controller is even plugged in

Will have to remove all my USB kit and start all over again populating my USB slots

I agree it is a nightmare but are we not men and it’s only a game <looks brooding and suspicious>

Course that’s the considered approach, if this messes up Il-2 there’ll be Hell to pay

Ming

Xbox 360 controllers are expensive (ridiculously so) neither can I use them anyway and Im not willing to buy one for just one game. I have other things I have to pay for yet. theyll probabaly fix it in time, but I don`t have time to wait.

Oh well, it was nice while it was going.

Brickstar

I uninstalled it, asked for the licence to be deleted, reinstalled it and no problem at all with Securom in re-licensing it, very pleased

Nothing to do though at the moment, I can’t get the main quest (as it were) kicking in again. I think I killed that heavy guy (for Dimitri) too early or something. I’m just sitting on the dock and wandering around enjoying the city sim, something will turn up

Ming

Drawn back to this one after leaving Fallout3’s main quest before quite finishing it and being booted out of the Garden forever. Gameplay hint  It’s all over very quickly apparently after a certain point I won’t mention

Now I’m in RPG mode in GTA4 after appreciating that in Fallout3 and it’s very rewarding, very good storyline and movielike once you twig how to advance the plot. Much more immersive in the end than Fallout3 (see radscorpion, run away: see deathclaw, find toilet paper) and with the city as beautifully rendered as Assassin’s Creed’s cities but much more massive in scale, and with city life going on around you in a way that Oblivion and Fallout3 promised (RadiantAI or summat) but didn’t deliver, not as realistically as GTA4’s effort anyway

Using a smoothshadows tweak and high graphics settings in 1600 x 1200. City simulation. European gangsters rackets simulation. It’s a convincing sim

Ming

Dimitri came back to haunt me btw. To haunt us I should say. My brother isn’t at all happy with me

New patch delivered (patches 1 and 2 are in this patch too)
