Fascinating Red Flag debrief

Anyone interested in modern fighter combat and air power there are a great couple of youtube vids from a USAF Colonel explaining what happened when the Indian Air Force brought their latest Su-30MKI Flankers to Nellis to play in the big Red Flag exercises this year…

Lots of very interesting stuff and apparently the day of the guns in close dogfight is still not over yet…!

Great stuff.

Who needs missiles anyway. Just ‘go to guns and drill his brains out’.

WB.

Good find, interesting!

Talking about guns what is the status of the RAF’s Typhoons, the last i heard we were not going to have operational guns as a cost saving measure even thou they have to physically be there as the aircraft is designed with the weight of guns in mind.

Gun is back on the 'Phoon Meako.

They tried to save money by deleting it - but realised that a gun-shaped piece of metal was needed to keep the CofG and fly-by-wire control system from disagreeing with each other…

A futher plan was to not buy any spares, ammo or do any training stuff for it. However this now has be overtaken by events - the Harrier for example in the 'Stan doesn’t have guns and is relying on CVR-7 rockets. Effective but overkill for a single Taleban on a moped.

The latest I hear is that they have bitten the bullet (:D) and gun + spares are now funded.

(Interestingly the German Eurofighters in their first fighter bomber wing will have to make do with cannon but no bombs for their first year of ops because of a lack of cash.)

Glad to hear it has guns now, when i first heard of the decision to lose the guns i thought back to the 50’s decision to build the phantom without guns and then they had to firstly fit gunpods and then redesign to include guns on later versions.

As you say so many examples where guns come into their own, not always appropriate to use a missile or a 500lb bomb.

Seems like the RAF is having so much fun with the Typhoon’s 27mm cannon they are forgetting to look outside every now and again…

Lol, why on earth is there an approach through a bombing range?!
