EAF DCS Harrier Training Syllabus

OD: Good fun last night getting my head around the Harrier in that OCU mission/training ground. Quite chuffed I managed a VTOL landing without breaking anything. Thanks for hosting & patience!

Gonna have to sharpen up my jet ACM skills I can see! Labels off completely in VR means I had no tally on you last night unless you were very close. I have the a/c labels set to a tiny dim black dot as a compromise but I see that ED still haven’t fixed the visibility issues. Back in the 2D days I remember trying to formate with a chum in the A-10C and even though I could see he was nearby on the SADL datalink link - we couldn’t see each other.

Frustrating as labels off in Il-2BoX in VR is actually quite doable.

Any chance of posting the OCU mission (or sending it to those with the AV-8B) so we can get some offline training in using that template?

No problem, I’ll see if I can put the mission on to Dropbox. At the moment I wouldn’t say that it was finished. I’ll see if I can sit down on the mission editor tonight and finish it off. The final tests are not yet ready and I’m thinking about making a rocket range using the bullseye targets from the Mod.

Tracking targets is not easy, it would have been easier if I was in an F-15, or something of that size, but the Hawk and Harrier are both pretty small. It take practice, I find it a challenge but doable now. IL2 BoX is definitely easier though. Ideally this training would be done on the NTTR map, as it is easier to see stuff and find big open spaces but not everyone has it so that’s a no go. Normandy is a possibility though.

I’ll see what I can do.

OD

I’ve taken the ideas trialled in the Georgia map and put them into the Normandy map for some variation.
The airfield (Lessay) is close to the coast and not far from Jersey and Guernsey. I have set up a target range, consisting of three bullseye targets on a beach in Jersey. (Each bull has a container in the centre as a target; I don’t think it gets destroyed no matter how many times it is hit, but we’ll see.)

Aircraft Control Practice:
The airfield will have the same set up for practicing circuits as in Georgia. However, it will now be easier to locate where you are due to trial vertial landings and take offs as I have put in a FARP. A FARP has four helipads already marked out and a T showing you which way to approach from. I have set it up to be able to rearm and refuel aircraft, but you will only be able to take off and land vertically. The same system of flares is in place to let you know whether you have postitioned the aircraft successfully.

Aircraft Systems Practice:
This can be carried out over Jersey target range.

Weapons Practice:
This has been catered for by the Jersey target range

Processes:
This will be carried out over the English Channel with a Tanker that also has a TACAN Beacon. There will be a JTAC positioned on the Jersey Target Range.

Carrier Operations:
There are two carriers in the map, one static just off the coast by the FARP. The second is steaming around in the main body of the English Channel. This will allow for carrier practice in all scenarios.

Conditions:
At present the map is in good weather and around midday. I will make variations that have mist, cloud, rain, wind and night. This should give us a chance to practice in all conditions.

Air to Air:
I will be adding the BAe Hawk to the map for dissimilar air combat. We found the other day that they are relatively well matched in terms of specifications. We’re not talking BVR combat, and over Normandy there is little to no terrain masking, so it is all done by the Mk I eyeball…and AIM-9 Sidewinders! I can add the F-5E, Mirage and/or F-15C if people would like more options, but they might be getting a little too challenging unless we restrict them to

Regular training:
Both Flash and Topsy said they’d be willing to make one evening a training night. I probably wouldn’t go for the whole evening but maybe an hour on the OCU map and then look at something else. I’d suggest that maybe we post in advance on the WhatsApp group and the Forum what is that we’d like to do beforehand so that we’re all working off the same page; or we could put a weekly programme together now. I’m also hoping that we can get Simple Radio to work. This will allow for us to get used to using the radio in the Harrier and means we can have channels for different things that can be controlled without having to Alt+Tab out of the game.

At this stage I think that we all have the buttons assigned in a way that we’ll all be happy with, so we don’t need to go over that again - unless someone wants to. We all know how to start up the aircraft, though some could do it quicker; but it’s not a race. I think we could do with standardising rules around take off and landing processes though. At present it is all a bit too adhoc. So maybe this is where we should start on Monday at 20:00? I’ll make sure I have the map finished for then.

If I try and write down all of the processes that we devise then it can be written up and put into the EAF Wiki and on the forum. This could be useful even for those that don’t fly the Harrier as they will at least know what to expect when four or five Harriers approach the airfield.

First test:
Tested the map with Red last night. It’s coming together well, I’ve squashed some bugs and developed some ideas. I’ll have a go at putting them into place tonight while Laura is out in the time I have before I have to go. I’m going to put a pilot name on each aircraft. This will then give personalised messages when you complete certain events.

I’m also going to add a Viggen for Mikke, but I think he should get the Harrier and join us! I’ve added the Mirage and the Hawk for Air-Air practice. The target zones can be hit repeatedly and will not be destroyed. I am experimenting with triggers for bomb hits, but that needs some more testing. I’m thinking that this may be handy for the Mk-82’s as they are unguided. I won’t do it for the LGBs or Mavericks.

Once this is all finalised I’ll condense all this into one post so it’s not sprawling across a thread.

Nah, it’s too slooooow… And it can’t kill ships that shoot back!

The Viggen doesn’t kill much else

Temporary glitch due to ED changing how atmospheric thingies work in DCS world that messed up sighting in the Viggen. Hopefully fixed in next patch.
If I want to go slow with a heavy load, I can always use the A-10C (though it would probably take some months before I can do much useful stuff in it). :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, btw, when the firing button works, the Viggen can be used to kill Migs as well.

Changelog update:
After last night’s session I have changed the following:
[ul][li]Mirage 2000C moved to another airfield - because it was an opposition aircraft it could not be rearmed or refuelled if it flew out of the same base as the Harrier.
[/li][li]Added HAWK SAM battery to the airfield to take out any Mig-21’s or Mig-29’s that approched the field. It will only switch on if they fly within a certain radius of the airfield.
[/li][li]Ships added for the Viggen to take out with support from the Harriers.
[/li][li]Harrier Flight added to the Tarrawa that is sailing in the English Channel.
[/li][li]Red target range added on another island, so that some, limited, ground attack training can be carried out in an aggressor aircraft.
[/li][li]Added messages to confirm the destruction of Migs. It should be possible to keep spawning the Migs. Once the Mig-29’s have been destroyed it should be possible to return to the trigger zone and get a new Flight of Mig-21’s
[/li][li]Increased the number of Mig-21s that spawns in from 2 to 4.[/ul]
[/li]I think most parts of the OCU seem to work now, with the FARP giving a good area for landing, especially with the tailored messages and coloured smoke indicating which pad should be landed on by each pilot.
If we can now convince Marsh to part with his cash and get the Harrier then we will have 7 pilots!

Sounds good OD! I hope I can fly on thursday, they said it was going to rain thursday/friday, but latest weather report says sunny, so it might be that I have the sun shining in until 21:30 or so, and by that time it’s too close to bedtime for me anyway.
