19/11 RoF mission

Camel, tripe or SE5…or you can have any of the older models. Noop 11 and 17 or DH2.
Anything you like as long as it’s historically correct.

If I ever make Ace, I might stay away from the Camel.

You was on him a while and your shooting is crap, I saw it all as I was right behind you

I record our missions and watch the playback; I’ve found I am putting lots of rounds between the wings of Albies (!!!) and also not leading at the correct angle so if the bandit is in a medium left turn (for example) I’m overestimating his speed and underestimating his radial velocity and firing too ‘high’ so many of my round hit his is right planes trailing edge, right rear fuselage and empennage. Opposite if he’s going right.

I’ll try to put up a pic; I need to aim more in front of the nose horizontally - don’t know if anyone else has found this. Might be being more used to WW2 aircraft?

If I ever make Ace,

Sod’s Law says you get and Archie in the face on 4

I’ve noticed that I was leading too much to start with - like you say probably as a result of lots of hours in WW2 planes. Now I aim just in front of the nose or just ahead of the centre of the top wing. That way I seem to get better engine hits or pilot kills. Also I get in really close!

The other thing to consider Marsh is that you might be slipping or skidding whilst firing. There are very few clues to keep a well coordinated turn going in the heat of the combat.

WB.

My tactic is to not lead. I get up very close. My convergence is set as low as it will go. Everything I do in WWII goes out of the window apart from the basic rules…keep height and energy etc. I never fire unless the bastage is right in front of me and big in my sights.

MVR would not fire his guns unless he was closer than 20 metres. Sometimes closer.
Albert Ball would take out 2 seaters by stalking them unseen, flying right underneath them. He’d pull the lewis down off the foster and shoot through the cockpits.

Very up close and personal is WWI combat.
That is why our dogfights are so frantic, close combat.
I love it that way.
Poodling merrily along…then 30 seconds later it’s utter choas

Sod’s Law says you get and Archie in the face on 4

…ain’t that the truth

BTW you’re on 4 aren’t you

Thanks, you’re both right about being the importance of close; I was pretty ruddy close to those 'orrid 'uns and had to keep blipping but still my hit rate was not terribly good. I think one problem is I am simply leading at the wrong angle - I’ll try to get a pic. However…

The other thing to consider Marsh is that you might be slipping or skidding whilst firing. There are very few clues to keep a well coordinated turn going in the heat of the combat.

That’s a very good point and I’ll have another look to see if I were buggering around sideways.

BTW you’re on 4 aren’t you

Flak-magnet time…

Am really enjoying RoF so thanks again to Brigs for this campaign and everyone else for making it such darned good fun.

Dam!! This looks like a lot of fun now that Ive read your combat reports! I may have to give it a go.

Dependent on plane type I find out where my bullets go by going into a slight decent and fire at the ground and see what pattern the bullets make.
Remembering this pattern, I usually fire just ahead of the wings in line with the engine, if you fire too late or early you hit the wings which snap off or if you are right on the money you hit the engine or pilot.

I wouldn’t laugh much, honest guv’

Everyone is welcome Apollo…Mondays 21:30 GMT
Come an join us.
All you need is RoF and the Pup addon plane.

Yes, would be good to see you Apollo. Don’t forget the base game is free so all you’d need to start is the Pup like Brigstock says.

WB.

@Apollo; it’s great fun on 3 levels:

  • All missions undertaken with apposite black humour
  • Probability of chaotic fights at murderously short range
  • The aircraft and flight model ‘feel’ great; I have great difficulty finding much inspiration for Il-2 after RoF

Fantastic time guaranteed, right up until you collide head-on with an Albatross

Thanks gents. I have the Free Demo. What if I buy the Lite Upgrade for 19.99?? Will that give me all the planes I need? Or is it over-killl?
I tried the game in multiplayer about 8-10 months ago with Red. I liked it ,but didn’t like the 1000m sniper shots some guys were doing. Perhaps that has been rectified now? Or you gents can teach me how to do it :o.?
Just let me know what I need and I’ll join you as soon as the SEOW is done.

Hi Apollo,
I would by the Pup if you want to participate with our Coop and buy the planes you like or such an upgrade pack when there is a sale again. They come every few months and I bet there will be abig one in december

The sniper-shooting is fixed. The bullet-dispersion was increased and the whole weaponmechanics overworked in one of the last updates.
But coming from WW2 you have to get used to dogfight with these machines especially doing Boom&Zoom,
you get much slower out of dangerzone after a attack than with the a Spitfire

Or the 109!!
Thanks for the info Paf. I will have to fly a little with you gents to get used to the FM and Weapons Modelling(ballistics).

Does anybody have the ICE? Is it worth getting? Is it much better than the Demo I have now? I assume it is, but what are some of the differences?

The “demo” is the full game but with only 2 planes available. The ICE-Edition has more planes and would be a nice starting point.

Thank you! That’s all I need to know. I’ll get it as soon as I get back home.
